Summary

Akron left-hander Rodney Boone and three relievers combined on a four-hit shutout, while designated hitter Alexfri Planez and right fielder Joe Lampe had two-out RBIs in the sixth inning of a 4-0 win over the Altoona Curve and fourth straight victory in the third game of a six-game series at Peoples Natural Gas Field Thursday night.

Turning Point

Boone held Altoona scoreless until a pair of one-out singles in the fifth inning. He retired third baseman Mike Jarvis on a foul popup, and with two runners on, right-hander Bradley Hanner induced an inning-ending fielder’s choice by catcher Abrahan Gutierrez. In the next half inning, against Curve left-hander Dominic Perachi, center fielder Chase DeLauter walked with one out, third baseman Dayan Frías hit a two-out infield single, and Planez hit an RBI single – his fifth hit and fifth RBI in two games – before Lampe lined a two-run double to left field to make it 4-0.

Mound Presence

Boone struck out the first two batters of the game and had three total while holding Altoona hitless through the first four innings, while working around an error, hit batter and four walks. Boone left after 4 2/3 innings, and Hanner pitched 2 1/3 scoreless frames, working around a hit and two walks with three strikeouts. Right-hander Ross Carver allowed a double and walk but got groundouts to finish a scoreless eighth inning. Right-hander Lenny Torres Jr. worked around two walks to strike out the side in the ninth inning for Akron’s second shutout in three games in Altoona.

Duck Tales

The RubberDucks grabbed a first-inning lead against right-hander Sean Sullivan, who walked shortstop Kahlil Watson with one out. DeLauter doubled off the right-field wall, and first baseman Aaron Bracho hit a sacrifice fly to right field.
