BILOXI, MS – The Biloxi Shuckers put the tying run in scoring position and the winning run at first, but a popup to second ended the comeback attempt in a 7-6 loss to the Mississippi Braves at MGM Park on Saturday night.
The Shuckers began the night on the right foot. A groundout from Carlos Rodriguez brought home Tyler Black for the first run of the night in the second. In the fourth, they tallied another when Jeferson Quero lined a single to left, his first of two hits on the night.
With the lead at 2-0, Shuckers’ starter Adam Seminaris cruised through his first five innings. He scattered three hits and struck out seven to tie his season-high. In the fifth, however, the M-Braves offense came alive. A leadoff home run from Javier Valdes ended the shutout, and an RBI single and a sacrifice fly off reliever Ryan Middendorf gave the M-Braves a 3-2 lead. Andrew Moritz then lined a single to right-center to extend the lead to 5-2 before the inning ended.
The Shuckers comeback attempt began in the seventh when an error brought home Quero, which made it a 5-3 game. In the top of the eighth, however, the M-Braves struck for two off solo shots from Justin Dean and Valdes, his second of the night.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Shuckers brought it within one. A bases-loaded RBI walk from Wes Clarke drove home Jackson Chourio, who started the inning with a single. Quero, the next batter, lined a single to left to score Freddy Zamora, which made it 7-5. Zavier Warren pulled the Shuckers within one after a sacrifice fly to right.
Harold Chirino threw a scoreless ninth, needing five pitches to complete the perfect inning. Chirino’s extended his scoreless streak to nine innings, the longest by any Shuckers player this season.
Chourio led off the bottom half with a single and was pushed to second on a walk to Black. Isaac Collins, who entered the game as a pinch runner, popped out to second base to end the game.
Seminaris (1-3) took the loss while Domingo Robles (2-1) earned the win after allowing one earned run in six innings. Jake McSteen earned his first save of the year.
The series is set to conclude tomorrow at MGM Park with a 1:05 p.m. first pitch. Chourio will be presented with his 2022 Rawlings MiLB Gold Glove Award® during a special pregame ceremony prior to first pitch.
