Four Home Runs, Six Runs Lead Shuckers to 6-1 Win over Biscuits
BILOXI, MS – Even a two-hour rain delay could not stop the Biloxi Shuckers (44-44, 10-9) offense from tallying 10-plus hits for a fifth straight game, and the rain certainly did not stop the Shuckers from winning their fifth out of the last six, this time a 6-1 win over
BILOXI, MS – Even a two-hour rain delay could not stop the Biloxi Shuckers (44-44, 10-9) offense from tallying 10-plus hits for a fifth straight game, and the rain certainly did not stop the Shuckers from winning their fifth out of the last six, this time a 6-1 win over the Montgomery Biscuits (44-43, 8-10) at Riverwalk Stadium on Friday night. The win clinched at least a series split for Biloxi and brought them even with the Pensacola Blue Wahoos for first place in the Southern League South Division second-half standings.
As with the first three games of the series, the Shuckers’ offense started early, this time on a triple from Tyler Black to the wall in right-center to lead off the game. One batter later, Jackson Chourio singled to right to extend his hit streak to eight and drive in his team-leading 56th run of the year. The Shuckers added on to the lead in the second with a solo shot from Felix Valerio, his first home run since June 1, and a two-run shot from Chourio, his team-leading 14th of the year. The multi-hit performance was Chourio’s seventh in his last eight games.
In the third, Wes Clarke smashed a solo shot to left, his second in as many days, extending Biloxi’s lead to 5-0. Lamar Sparks then tallied Biloxi’s fourth home run in four innings with a solo shot in the fourth to right.
The 6-0 lead was plenty of run support for Shuckers’ starter Carlos Rodriguez, who limited the Biscuits to three hits and struck out three before the rain hit with one out in the bottom of the fourth.
After an hour and 51-minute delay, Biloxi’s longest in-game delay this year, play resumed. TJ Shook entered for Biloxi and allowed the Biscuits’ first run of the game on an RBI double from Tristan Peters. Shook dominated after that, retiring 10 of the final 11 batters he faced with four strikeouts.
In the ninth, Max Lazar closed the game out with three strikeouts to work around a single, giving Biloxi a 6-1 win. Shook (4-3) earned the win while Biscuits’ starter Mason Montgomery (2-3) took the loss.
The Shuckers will play for the series win tomorrow at 6:05 p.m. at Riverwalk Stadium. The Shuckers’ starter is to be announced, but the Biscuits will start right-handed pitcher Cole Wilcox. The game can be heard on Cruisin’ WGCM 1240 AM, 100.9 FM with coverage beginning at 5:50 p.m. with the Biloxi Shuckers Pregame Show. The game can also be seen live on MiLB.tv as the Free Game of the Day.
