The Biloxi Shuckers (26-46) secured a 5-4 win over the Montgomery Biscuits (39-31) in their regularly scheduled game on Tuesday night at MGM Park, extending their season-best winning streak to seven games. Earlier in the night, the Shuckers were walked off in the continuation of a suspended game from July 18, 6-5.

Suspended Game from July 18

When the game started on July 18, the Shuckers yet again took advantage of facing Biscuits’ opener LHP Faustino Carrera in the first inning. After Garrett Mitchell worked a lead-off walk and moved to second on a ground out by Mitch Longo, David Fry singled to left, driving in Mitchell to put the Shuckers up 1-0 three batters into the game. Alexander Palma then launched a two-run homer on the first pitch from Carrera, putting the Shuckers up 3-0. After one batter hit for the Biscuits in the bottom of the second inning, the game was suspended due to rain.

When the game was resumed on Tuesday night, LHP Leo Crawford took the mound for the Shuckers. The first batter he faced grounded out to score the inherited runner from third, bringing the Biscuits within two runs at 3-1. Montgomery would grab back another run in the bottom of the third on a sacrifice fly by Xavier Edwards, but Crawford navigated the remainder of the inning to maintain the lead.

Longo gave the Shuckers some breathing room in the top of the fifth inning with a two-run homer to right, his fourth of the season, regaining a three-run advantage at 5-2.

RHP Matt Hardy (L, 1-3) entered in the bottom of the seventh for the Shuckers and allowed a solo home run, a single and an RBI double to the first three batters he faced, making it 5-4. Joey Roach flied to right for the first out before Seaver Whalen was hit by a pitch, putting men on the corners with one out. Jake Palomaki dropped down a sacrifice bunt to score the tying run, knotting the game at 5-5. Hardy then induced a pop up on the infield from Jim Haley, but Gabriel Garcia dropped the ball in fair territory, allowing the winning run to score and giving the Biscuits a 6-5 win.

Game Two

The bottom of the lineup gave the Shuckers an early lead against the Biscuits in their seven-inning contest. Reigning Double-A South Player of the Week Chad Spanberger doubled with one out in the bottom of the second and after Brent Diaz was hit by a pitch, Cam Devanney doubled to the right-field gap, scoring both runners to put Biloxi ahead 2-0.

Spanberger would be in the middle of the scoring again in the bottom of the third. After RHP Jayden Murray (L, 0-1) recorded the first two outs, Palma and Luis Castro both worked walks, bringing up Spanberger, who doubled to the right-field gap to drive in two more, extending the Shuckers’ lead to 4-0.

RHP Carlos Luna (W, 1-0) made his Double-A debut as the starter for the Shuckers in game two and pitched well, allowing just one run in five innings of work. RHP Braden Webb (H, 2) came on to pitch the sixth inning and loaded the bases with no outs but allowed only one run on a groundout, preserving a 4-2 Shucker’ lead.

In the bottom of the sixth, Ryan Aguilar singled with one out and stole second before Brice Turang doubled to straight away center field, sending home Aguilar to give Biloxi a 5-2 cushion.

RHP Zach Vennaro (S, 2) entered for the seventh inning and after recording the first out allowed a double just inside of third by Haley and a bleeding single up the third base line that stayed fair right at the base, bringing the tying run to the plate. Vennaro struck out Jonathan Aranda, but Ruben Cardenas singled to right field, driving in both base runners to bring the Biscuits within a run. Facing Cal Stevenson, Vennaro worked a 2-2 count before striking out the Biscuits’ outfielder to seal the win.

Biloxi continues their series against the Biscuits on Wednesday night. RHP Lucas Erceg (0-2, 5.64) is set to pitch for the Shuckers opposite Biscuits’ RHP Easton McGee (1-0, 4.68) for a 6:35 pm first pitch. The game can be heard locally on Cruisin’ WGCM AM 1240/FM 100.9.
