RHP Zack Brown (W, 4-0) struck out a career high ten batters while tying a career high with seven scoreless innings to lead the Biloxi Shuckers (32-21) to a 9-1 win over the Mississippi Braves (24-29) on Thursday night. Jake Hager socked a pair of home runs in the win for Biloxi, his first career multi-homer game.
The Shuckers provided quick offense for Brown in the early innings to fuel his start. The four through eight spots in the order collected five straight hits in the bottom of the second inning against starter RHP Bryse Wilson (L, 1-1). Tyler Heineman followed four singles with a bases loaded double to plate two and put the Shuckers up 3-0. Troy Stokes Jr. added a sacrifice fly in the frame to make it 4-0.
In the third, Jake Gatewood doubled to begin the inning. Blake Allemand drove him in for the second straight time, and Corey Ray added a bases loaded walk to extend the lead to six. Hager provided his blasts in the fourth and eighth. His solo home run hooked around the left field foul pole, and his two-run no doubter in the eighth banged off the left-centerfield scoreboard to provide the 9-1 final.
Along with his career high ten strikeouts, Brown collected eight more outs on the ground with a rock solid defense behind him. At one point, he retired 14 M-Braves in a row. RHP Jon Olczak handled the final two innings for Biloxi, allowing an unearned run and ending the game with a strikeout of Taylor Murphy.
Biloxi looks to grab a series win on Friday night at MGM Park with LHP Kodi Medeiros (4-2, 4.29) getting the start. He opposes Mississippi's RHP Andres Santiago (3-0, 3.38) on a Fireworks Friday presented by Margaritaville Resort Biloxi with first pitch set for 6:35 PM CT.
