Three errors hurt the Biloxi Shuckers (17-40) in a 5-2 defeat against the Birmingham Barons (31-26) despite a quality outing from Noah Zavolas on Friday night at MGM Park

Biloxi jumped out to a lead in the bottom of the second inning. Batting with two outs in the frame, David Fry connected for a home run to right field, his sixth of the season, to give the Shuckers a 1-0 advantage.

The Barons struck back immediately in the top of the third. RHP Noah Zavolas (L, 2-5) allowed three consecutive hits including an RBI double from Romy Gonzalez, tying the contest at 1-1. Micker Adolfo then hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score the go-ahead run and Gonzalez raced in to score on a throwing error from Garrett Mitchell, giving Birmingham a 3-1 lead.

Hurley, MS native Konnor Pilkington (W, 3-4) got the start for the Barons and allowed just the solo home run to Fry over five one-hit innings. Zavolas countered with six innings but departed trailing 3-1, after giving up just four hits and one walk while striking out six as part of a quality outing.

Birmingham added on two more in the seventh inning on a single and a throwing error by Brice Turang, putting the Barons up 5-1. RHP Peter Strzelecki struck out the side in the ninth inning for the Shuckers, extending his scoreless streak to a season-best 9.1 innings, the longest for any Shuckers’ reliever this season.

The Shuckers mounted a comeback in the ninth inning. Yeison Coca led off with a hustle double and Turang singled to left, putting men on the corners with no outs. Mitchell went down looking on a 3-2 pitch from LHP Anderson Severino and Alexander Palma drove in the Shuckers’ second run of the game with a sacrifice fly to center, but Luis Castro struck out to bring the game to a close.

Biloxi continues their series against the Barons on Saturday night. RHP Lucas Erceg (0-2, 4.30) gets the start for the Shuckers against Barons’ RHP Blake Battenfield (5-3, 4.36) for a 6:35 pm first pitch. The game can be heard locally on Cruisin’ WGCM AM 1240/FM 100.9 and can be streamed on MiLB TV.
