Fischer Makes History with Three-Homer Night in Shuckers Win

BILOXI, MS – Behind a record-setting three-home run night from Andrew Fischer, the Biloxi Shuckers (58-61, 23-31) earned their second straight win, 8-1, over the Knoxville Smokies (65-57, 27-26) at Keesler Federal Park on Thursday night. Fischer, with three home runs, became the first Milwaukee Brewers minor league hitter to reach 40 home runs in a season since 1974, and trails only Gordon Thomas for the all-time record, set at 51. Fischer also reached 100 RBI between High-A Wisconsin and Biloxi, becoming the first Brewers Minor League player to reach 100 in a season since Hunter Morris in 2012. Fischer’s three-home run game was the eighth in Shuckers franchise history and the second this season, joining Blake Burke. Fischer is currently tied for the 15^th-most home runs in a minor league season since the reorganization of Minor League Baseball in 1963. The game also included a one-hour and 51-minute rain delay after the bottom of the sixth inning.

The Shuckers opened the scoring in the second with three runs, led by an RBI double from Braylon Payne and a two-run home run from Damon Keith off the batter’s eye in center. The Shuckers made it 5-0 an inning later with Andrew Fischer’s historic 40^th home run, a two-run blast to right. The Smokies scored their lone run in the fourth with an RBI double from Carter Trice. Fischer then smashed his 41^st home run of the season, and his 21^st at the Double-A level, with a two-run shot down the right-field line. In the seventh, Fischer made it 8-1 with his third home run of the night and his 42^nd of the season. Bishop Letson (6-6) earned the win after allowing one run over 5.0 innings and striking out five. Jake Knapp (0-2) took the loss for Knoxville. Stiven Cruz also earned his fourth save of the season with 3.0 scoreless innings to end the game.

Andrew Fischer (3-for-4), Braylon Payne (2-for-4) and Mike Boeve (3-for-4) each recorded multi-hit performances. Luis Peña (1-for-3) also extended his hit streak to nine consecutive games, including every game he’s played at the Double-A level.

The series continues on Friday, with first pitch scheduled for 6:35 p.m. Jaron DeBerry (7-8, 4.41) is scheduled to start for the Shuckers against Dawson Netz (6-4, 3.13) for the Smokies. It’s the 11th Fireworks Friday of the season presented by F.E.B. Distributing, with fireworks shooting off at the conclusion of the contest. The Shuckers will also celebrate and honor first responders with First Responders Night. The team will make a donation to a local non-profit through the team’s Heart of a Shucker Community Fund prior to first pitch.
