Shuckers’ left-handed pitcher Nick Bennett has been named one of the two Brewers’ Minor League Pitchers of the Month for July as announced by the Milwaukee Brewers on Thursday. It is the first Pitcher of the Month honor for Bennett and the first for a Shuckers’ pitcher this season.

In four starts in the month of July, Bennett went 2-1 with a 1.88 ERA, the lowest ERA for a month in his career, striking out 27 hitters over 24.0 innings while allowing seven runs, five earned. During July, Bennett had the second-best ERA in the Southern League and finished second in WHIP (1.04), tied for third in strikeouts, fourth in average (.205) and sixth in innings pitched. He also had the lowest ERA among qualified starters in the Brewers’ Minor League system while tallying the second lowest WHIP and finishing fifth in strikeouts and average plus sixth in innings pitched.

During his first start of the month, Bennett went up against Rays’ top prospect Taj Bradley, who is rated as the #31 prospect in all of baseball by MLB Pipeline. Biloxi’s southpaw outdueled Bradley, pitching six shutout innings and allowed just three hits and a walk while striking out a career-high nine batters. Bennett earned the win in a 2-0 Shuckers’ win over Montgomery.

In his start on July 22, Bennett was masterful over 7.0 innings, a new career high for the lefty, allowing just one unearned run. The 24-year-old struck out five and needed just 79 pitches to make it through seven innings, retiring the final eight batters in order to finish his night while helping the Shuckers to a 5-1 win over the Blue Wahoos.

Bennett then took the hill again on Thursday, July 28 against the Biscuits and once again allowed just one run. The former Louisville Cardinal struck out eight across six innings but didn’t receive any run support while he was on the mound. Biloxi rallied to tie the game in the seventh and scored five runs in the eighth as part of a 6-1 victory.

Taken in the sixth round of the 2019 draft by the Milwaukee Brewers out of Louisville, Bennett takes home the first Brewers’ Minor League Pitcher of the Month honor of the year for a Shuckers’ pitcher and the first since Ethan Small earned the award in June of 2021. Bennett is the 13th Shuckers’ pitcher to be named the Brewers’ Pitcher of the Month and it is the 15th overall time a Shuckers’ pitcher has garnered the award, with All-Star closer Jorge Lopez winning the award three times in 2015.

Biloxi continues their six-game series against the Mississippi Braves on Thursday night at Trustmark Park. LHP Brandon Knarr (1-3, 4.13) takes the hill for the Shuckers against M-Braves RHP Darius Vines (6-4, 4.14) for a 6:35 pm first pitch. The game can be seen on MiLB.TV and heard locally on WGCM AM 1240/FM 100.9 or online here.
