PEARL, MS - The Biloxi Shuckers (49-37, 8-8 2nd half) effort on the mound Friday night was quick, concise and dominate in a 3-0 shutout win over the Mississippi Braves (39-46, 6-10 2nd half) at Trustmark Park. Drew Rasmussen, Johan Belisario (W, 7-0) and Cody Ponce (S, 1) held the M-Braves to just three hits on the night in the 13th shutout victory of the season.
Tucker Davidson (L, 3-6) was solved early on by the bottom half of the Shuckers order in the second inning. Jake Gatewood and Weston Wilson linked up for consecutive singles and Joantgel Segovia followed with an RBI double for a 1-0 lead. The double was the first of three hits on the day for Segovia in a 3-for-4 day at the plate. With one out, Rasmussen then dropped a sacrifice bunt to drive in Wilson, his first career RBI, extending the lead to 2-0.
On the mound, Rasmussen tossed three shutout innings to open the game and allowed just a lone hit to Riley Unroe in the first. The right-hander hurled 45 pitches before turning the game over to Belisario in the fourth. Back with the Shuckers after a spot start at Triple-A, Belisario carried the bulk of the shutdown effort with five more scoreless innings, striking out five and allowing just two hits without a walk.
In the eighth, Luis Aviles Jr. led off with a double but was thrown out trying to steal third. C.J. Hinojosa followed with another double off Connor Johnstone in the next at bat and came around to score on a wild pitch for a late 3-0 cushion. Ponce entered in the ninth inning and retired the side in order for his first save of the season and first career one-inning save.
The Shuckers continue their series with the M-Braves on Saturday with first pitch scheduled for 6:05 pm. The Shuckers will send RHP Alec Bettinger (4-5, 3.77) to the mound and Mississippi will throw LHP Joey Wentz (4-7, 4.81).
