Hello from Maryvale and American Family Fields of Phoenix! The Milwaukee Brewers and the Biloxi Shuckers are deep into Spring Training as the Shuckers prepare for the team’s opener on Friday, April 3, against the Rocket City Trash Pandas. The team is scheduled for their home opener on Tuesday, April 7, against the Pensacola Blue Wahoos. In this edition on the notebook, we’ll take a look at a pair of Shuckers Spring Training games, the final Spring Breakout game and the final two Brewers Spring Training games in Arizona.

SATURDAY

It was a morning affair for the Shuckers as they took on the Akron RubberDucks, Double-A affiliate of the Cleveland Guardians. Some early surprises came from the lineup card, with Eric Brown Jr. at third base and Jheremy Vargas at first. Brown, who played four different positions in 2025, has yet to play a professional game at third base.

Vargas, meanwhile, turned in the game of his life at first, despite not playing the position in a regular-season game since 2023. He made two diving plays, one towards the line and one towards second, and ripped a 101 MPH line drive up the middle for a single. Vargas is looking to build off a solid 2025 in Biloxi, where he hit .220 and appeared at four different positions as the primary utility player for manager Joe Ayrault.

On the mound, Tate Kuehner got the start for the Shuckers. Despite likely starting in Triple-A, he struck out a pair in the first and touched up to 96 MPH with his fastball.

Mike Boeve starred in a DH role, with a double down the right-field line and a 105 MPH, 446-foot home run to right-center. After being limited to 69 games in 2025, Boeve is looking to return to his 2024 form, where he held a .306/.375/.447 slash line, an .821 OPS and recorded 22 extra-base hits in 66 games with the Shuckers.

Other notable moments include a Jesús Made double off the wall in right-center, a running catch from Dasan Brown in deep center and Eduardo Garcia’s return to action (defense only) after fracturing his right wrist in winter ball.

During the big league game in the afternoon, Andrew Fischer continued his incredible spring. Against Team USA closer, and current San Diego Padre, Mason Miller, he turned around a 102 MPH fastball for a 112 MPH ground-run double to right center. Between the World Baseball Classic and Spring Training, Fischer was 6-for-19 with two doubles and two home runs.

The double marked the first allowed by Miller in 30 appearances and was the hardest ball in play allowed by Miller since May 7, 2023, when Salvador Perez hit a 112.4 MPH home run.

SUNDAY

With the big league club heading up to Milwaukee for their final two exhibition games, it was Shucker-palooza in Mesa! The Shuckers 2026 coaching staff served as the MLB staff for their Spring Training game against the Cubs, and plenty of Shuckers were in action between the Spring Training and Spring Breakout games.

Tyson Hardin got the start for the Brewers prospects and starred early, touching up to 97.1 MPH on his fastball. Others to appear include Brett Wichrowski and Jesús Broca.

At the plate, Jesús Made (1-for-3) starred early with a 112.7 MPH, 400-foot double to left-center off the Athletics 2025 first round pick, Jamie Arnold.

Blake Burke (2-for-3) also recorded three stolen bases and two singles off the lefty, Arnold. Other standouts include Andrew Fischer’s 111 MPH double down the right field line, Darrien Miller’s home run to right and Eric Bitonti’s 115.4 MPH, 420-foot moonshot to right center.

At Sloan Park, six potential 2026 Shuckers were in the Brewers’ starting lineup. Despite a 12-0 loss against a lineup likely set to open the year for the Cubs, Dylan O’Rae (1-for-4), Eric Brown Jr. (1-for-3) and Jacob Hurtubise (1-for-4) each tallied a hit. O’Rae’s, an infield single up the middle at 106 MPH, came off Cubs starter Cade Horton, coming off 2.1 WAR in rookie year.

MONDAY

The Shuckers continued their spring slate against the Chicago Cubs Double-A affiliate, and Southern League opponent, the Knoxville Smokies. With most Triple-A players either headed to Nashville or in Milwaukee with the Brewers, the Shuckers lineup looked similar to a potential Opening Day lineup, with Andrew Fischer, Jesús Made and Blake Burke among the top four in the order.

Facing Jaxon Wiggins, the 78th-ranked overall prospect per Baseball America, the Shuckers were held hitless through the first two innings before Jheremy Vargas roped a double down the left field line for the team’s first hit. It marked his first of two hits during the game, which later included a 100 MPH single to left.

Andrew Fischer continued to mash, with an early double against Wiggins and a go-ahead home run in the eighth inning. The home run was off the bat at 105 MPH and travelled 419 feet, landing just in front of the American Family Fields building in right-center.

Josh Adamczewski, starting for the second time in as many games for the Shuckers, lined a single into left. Adamczewski, who was moved to the outfield in the Arizona Fall League, is coming off a year with a .320/.420/.490 slash line, a .910 OPS and 28 extra-base hits across 71 games with High-A Wisconsin, Single-A Carolina and the Rookie-level ACL Brewers.
