In a game that included 16 combined runs, the Biloxi Shuckers (57-62, 23-29 2nd Half) fell to the Rocket City Trash Pandas (72-50, 31-22 2nd Half) 9-7 on Wednesday night at Toyota Field.

For a second consecutive night, the Shuckers jumped out to a lead in the first inning. Cam Devanney made it to second with a one-out hustle double and scored on a single to left by Garrett Whitley, putting Biloxi up 1-0. The Shuckers’ offense tagged on another run in the top of the second on a sacrifice fly by Corey Ray after a pair of singles by Yeison Coca and Jason Lopez, pushing Biloxi to a 2-0 advantage.

In the top of the third, Whitley launched a lead-off home run, his fifth of the year at Double-A, widening Biloxi’s lead to 3-0. RHP Carlos Luna retired the first eight batters in a row but a triple by Jordyn Adams and a single from Aaron Whitefield gave Rocket City their first run in the bottom of the third.

Biloxi opened up a four-run lead in the top of the fourth. In his Double-A debut, Wes Clarke picked up his first Double-A hit with a single to left and moved to third on a double from Coca. Lopez hit a liner back to the mound that ricocheted off of Trash Pandas’ starter LHP Ky Bush, who recovered and threw out Lopez at first, but not before Clarke came in to score and make it 4-1. Ray singled up the middle to drive in Coca and make it 5-1 Biloxi.

Rocket City charged back to tie the game in the bottom of the fourth on a solo home run by Zach Neto, his second of the year, and a three-run homer by Kyren Paris, his first at Double-A, knotting the game at 5-5. RHP Kent Hasler came on with a man on base and struck out one to leave the go-ahead run in scoring position.

Clarke came through with a clutch hit in the top of the fifth for Biloxi. Felix Valerio singled up the middle with one out and after a strikeout, Clarke connected for a two-run homer to left, his first at Double-A and 10th overall of the year, to once again put Biloxi up 7-5.

The Shuckers lead was unfortunately short lived as Zach Humphreys hit a game-tying two run homer in the bottom of the fifth inning, bringing the game back level. A Kevin Maitan two-run homer in the seventh inning off RHP Ryan Middendorf (L, 0-2) gave the Trash Pandas the lead for good as Biloxi managed just two base runners over the final four innings.

Biloxi continues their six-game series with the Trash Pandas on Thursday night. RHP Victor Castañeda takes the mound for the Shuckers against Rocket City RHP Sam Bachman for a 6:35 pm first pitch. The game can be seen on MiLB.TV and heard locally on WGCM AM 1240/FM 100.9 or online here.
