Durham Bulls right-handed pitcher Yonny Chirinos was named the International League Pitcher of the Week for the period July 3 through July 9, the league announced today. The announcement marks the second time in 2017 Chirinos has earned that honor, after he was selected by the league for the award on May 15.
In his lone start last week, the 23-year-old dealt eight shutout innings against the Toledo Mud Hens. On Friday, July 7, the native of Bachaquero, Venezuela allowed just four hits across eight frames, issuing just one walk while striking out six. Chirinos retired 18 of the final 20 batters he faced, as he worked into the eighth inning for the third straight start. In two starts this season against the Mud Hens at the DBAP, the right-hander spun 17 shutout frames, striking out 17 and walking just three.
On the year Chirinos is tied for second in the IL with eight wins, and ranks second in WHIP (0.96), third in opponent's batting average (.221) and fourth in ERA (3.06).
