Former Wake Forest star Sheets to play for Dash

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (April 3, 2018) - First baseman Gavin Sheets, a three-year star with Wake Forest University and a 2017 second-round pick by the Chicago White Sox, will begin the 2018 season on the Winston-Salem Dash's Opening Day roster.
Prior to being drafted 49th overall by Chicago last year, Sheets was a two-time All-ACC honoree with the Demon Deacons. The 21-year-old finished his three-year career with a .306 career average, 32 home runs and 149 RBIs in 166 career games.
Serving as a team captain during his junior year in 2017, Sheets registered one of the greatest seasons ever by a Demon Deacon. The slugger smashed 21 home runs, the second-most ever in a single season in program history and the most by a Wake Forest player since 2002.
Sheets, the son of former MLB player Larry Sheets, also led the NCAA with 84 RBIs while posting a .317 average. Manning first base, he finished the 2017 campaign with 24 consecutive errorless games to polish off a .991 fielding percentage.
After his selection in the MLB Draft, Sheets notched a combined .279 average with four home runs and 28 RBIs between stints with the AZL White Sox and the Low-A Kannapolis Intimidators. A native of Lutherville, Md., Sheets enters the season ranked by MLB Pipeline as the 12th-best prospect in the White Sox system.

The 2018 season begins on Thursday, April 5, when the Dash travel to Zebulon, N.C., to take on the Carolina Mudcats. The season opener will be broadcast live on WSJS Sports (600 AM and 101.5 FM), wsjssports.com and the TuneIn Radio App.
