DAYTONA BEACH, FL -The Daytona Tortugas lost their second straight game, shortened by rain, 9-3 against the Jupiter Hammerheads Sunday night at Radiology Associates Field at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. The Tortugas, once again, were the only team in baseball to wear all #9 jerseys to honor Jackie Robinson.
Jupiter got on the scoreboard three batters into the game. Brian Miller opened the game with a double, moved to third on a groundout, and scored on a Joe Dunand sacrifice fly.
The Hammerheads added another one with two outs in the top of the third. Jarrett Rindfleisch reached on a two-out walk, and came in to score from first on a Dunand double, his second RBI of the night.
In the top of the fourth, Jupiter doubled their 2-0 lead. After Stone Garrett and Silviano reached on one-out singles, they both moved over on a Boyles wild pitch. Luis Pintor would drive both runners in with a two-out single, to give the Hammerheads a 4-0 lead.
The Tortugas were able to crack the run column in the home half, with the use of three straight singles. First from Luis Gonzalez, followed by Tyler Stephenson, and capped by a Mitch Nay RBI single.
Jupiter got the run back in the top of the seventh, however, on a Riley Mahan single, driving in Dunand.
Trailing, 5-1, Daytona was able to cut the lead in half in the seventh inning. Bruce Yari led off the inning with a walk and moved to second on a Daniel Sweet single, before a wild pitch would place both runners in scoring position. TJ Friedl would then drive them both in with a two-run double to center.
Then, in the top of the ninth, Silviano put the game out of reach before Mother Nature came calling. RHP Alex Webb loaded the bases with one-out, and Silviano hit his second grand slam in as many nights, to give the Hammerheads a 9-3 lead. The game would be called one pitch later.
LHP Daniel Castano (2-0) gets the win, allowing one run and five hits in five innings.
LHP Ty Boyles (0-1) is handed the loss in his 2018 debut. He went just 3 2/3 innings, striking out four and allowing seven hits and four runs.
The Tortugas are off Monday, before starting a six-game road trip in Tampa on Tuesday and finishing up in Dunedin on Sunday. They will be back at The Jack on April 23 to host the Florida Fire Frogs.
First pitch on Tuesday is scheduled for 6:35 PM, with coverage beginning at 6:20 PM with The Metcare Pregame Show on AM 1230, AM 1490, and FM 106.9 WSBB.
