BRADENTON, FL—The Bradenton Marauders turned a record-tying six double plays and battered Daytona pitching for 15 hits as the Tortugas suffered a 10-0 defeat on Friday night at LECOM Park.
Bradenton (9-4) won their seventh straight game as they became the first Florida State League team since 1988 to turn six double plays in a game. Daytona (5-8) dropped their eighth consecutive game and was blanked for the second straight night.
The Marauders took the lead right away against Tortugas starter Jared Lyons. Emmanuel Terrero doubled down the right field line with one out. After a wild pitch, Lyons struck out the next man and had an 0-2 count on Tres Gonzalez. However, Gonzalez lined the next pitch into left field to bring in Terrero with the first run of the game.
On the other side, Daytona did record leadoff singles in the second and third inning against Bradenton starter Thomas Harrington. However, both hits were erased on ground ball double plays.
In the third, the bottom fell out for Daytona. In the inning, The Marauders strung together four hits, were the beneficiary of three Daytona errors, and also drew a walk and had a batter get plunked. All told, five runs scored for Bradenton, with two run singles by Termarr Johnson and Alexander Mojica providing the main damage. Lyons also was chased in the inning, as Bradenton led 6-0.
One frame later, Jefferson Lopez ran into trouble of his own as two singles and a walk loaded the bases with no outs to end the inning. Wyatt Hendrie lifted a sacrifice fly to add a run. However, Lopez managed to escape with no further damage, though the deficit was now 7-0.
The Tortuga offense continued to be flummoxed on the other side. The Marauders turned a double play for the third straight frame to end the top of the fourth, then pulled off a fourth twin killing to end the sixth.
Bradenton starter Thomas Harrington (2-0) threw 5.0 scoreless frames to pace the Marauders from a pitching standpoint.
The Marauders added another run against Mason Pelio in the seventh on an RBI single from Terrero, his fourth hit of the night. That put Bradenton ahead 8-0.
In the eighth, Daytona put together their best threat of the night, opening the inning with consecutive hits. However, a strikeout and another twin killing ended that opportunity.
After Bradenton reached double digits with two runs in the bottom of the eighth, the game ended with the Marauders making history, turning a 4-6-3 double play, their sixth of the game, to tie a Florida State League nine-inning record and nail down a 10-0 Bradenton win.
The Tortugas will play game five in Bradenton against the Marauders on Saturday night. RHP Ryan Cardona (0-0, 2.35) gets the ball for Daytona against RHP Derek Diamond (1-1, 4.00) for Bradenton. First pitch is at 6:30 with pregame on the Tortugas Radio Network and Bally Live with the Voice of the Tortugas Brennan Mense at 6:15 from LECOM Park in Bradenton.
