Greenville, SC - The Greenville Drive have gotten off to an outstanding start this season, posting the best record in the league through the first two months. As a reward for the terrific start, four Drive representatives will be part of the 2017 South Atlantic League All-Star Game festivities in Columbia.
Left-hander Logan Boyd and right-hander Stephen Nogosek will be part of the Southern Division pitching staff, while Roldani Baldwin has been named as one of the reserve catchers. In addition, Drive hitting coach Wilton Veras will hold the same role for the Southern Division.
"We are very proud to have four members of our club representing us at this year's South Atlantic League All-Star Game in Columbia," said Drive Manager Darren Fenster. "Logan, Stephen and Roldani have all played key roles on our team this season, and are a very big reason why we are in the position we are currently in."
"It's also very fitting for Wilton to be named to the game's coaching staff as well, having worked tirelessly with all of our hitters to build what has been a very productive offense to date. The guys are all incredibly deserving of the honor in being among the league's best."
A year after winning a franchise-record 14 games for the Drive, Boyd has continued his outstanding work on the mound in 2017. He ranks second in the South Atlantic League with seven victories, and he leads the Drive with 11 starts and 58 innings. He has thrown three starts of at least five shutout innings this year, and he had a stretch of 17 2/3 consecutive scoreless frames over a three-start span in May.
Nogosek currently leads the South Atlantic League with 10 saves on the season, and he took home the league's inaugural BC Powders Relief Pitcher of the Month for April, when he logged seven saves with a 2.17 ERA. In 18 appearances in 2017, Nogosek hasn't allowed a run in 13 of them, and he is 2-2 with a 2.15 ERA and 38 strikeouts in 29 1/3 innings.
Baldwin has made massive strides in his second year in Greenville, and his first as the team's full-time catcher. He is tied for the team lead with six homers, one of which was a walk-off blast on Opening Night, and he is hitting .263 with 28 RBI. He also leads the team with eight multi-RBI games, and he has the Drive's lone grand slam of the year, which he belted on May 3rd.
In his first year in Greenville, Veras has overseen a Drive offense that ranks third in the league with 259 runs, while also ranking in the league's top five with 96 doubles, 225 RBI, 170 walks and 76 stolen bases.
"Having four Drive representatives in the South Atlantic League All-Star Game is extremely exciting for our organization," commented Eric Jarinko, the Drive's General Manager. "The Red Sox player development system, which Wilton is a part of, deserves a tremendous amount of credit for the success that Logan, Stephen and Roldani are having this year. These are all outstanding representatives of the Greenville Drive and the Boston Red Sox, and we look forward to watching them participate in this month's All-Star festivities."
The 58th annual South Atlantic League All-Star Game will be held on Tuesday, June 20th at Spirit Communications Park in Columbia, South Carolina.
