Bulls' Bats Subdued in 6-2 Loss to Tides

DURHAM, NC - The Durham Bulls fell behind the visiting Norfolk Tides early Sunday evening and were never able to battle back, as the Tide's four-run second inning proved to be the difference in the Bulls' 6-2 loss at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
Norfolk was able to get to Bulls' starting pitcher Yonny Chirinos early, with the road team plating four runs on two doubles, a triple, a single, and a walk in the second inning for a lead they would hold throughout the rest of the evening. The four-run frame tied Chirinos' career-high for most runs in a single inning, while also singlehandedly tying for the most runs the right-hander had allowed in an entire game this season. Durham tried to battle back with a pair of early runs themselves, but the Bulls were never able to get closer than a couple of runs in the defeat.
Chirinos actually started the game with a perfect first inning including a pair of strikeouts before running into trouble in the second. Doubles by David Washington and Drew Dosch put runners on second and third with one out for Luis Sardiñas, who delivered with a two-RBI triple to center to get the Tides on the board. Logan Schafer followed two batters later with an RBI sacrifice fly, while an RBI single off the bat of Craig Gentry put Norfolk ahead 4-0.
The Bulls immediately took a bite out of their deficit in the bottom of the second with an RBI, fielder's choice groundout by Casey Gillaspie cutting the score to 4-1. Durham crept even closer with another single tally in the third, this time with Willy Adames tripling off the center field wall and eventually scoring on a throwing error by Sardinas at second base to make the game 4-2.
That would be as close as Durham would get however, as Norfolk pulled away with a solo home run by Drew Dosch in the fourth and an RBI double from Schafer in the seventh for the final 6-2 score.
Shane Peterson finished the game 2-3 to lead the Bulls' bats, while Adames went 1-3 with a triple and a run scored.
Chirinos (5-1) suffered his first loss of the season after allowing a season-high five runs on seven hits, one walk, and five strikeouts over six innings pitched. Tides starter Tyler Wilson (1-4) picked up his first win meanwhile after holding the Bulls to two runs, one earned, on six hits, three walks, and four strikeouts over seven innings pitched.
The Bulls (39-23) have an off-day on Monday before beginning a week-long road trip with a three-game series in Columbus. RHP Jake Faria (6-1, 3.07) is set to take the mound for Durham in game one, with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 pm.
