DURHAM, NC - Norfolk Tides starter David Hess did not allow a hit until the seventh inning, leading the visitors past the Durham Bulls 13-0 Tuesday morning at the DBAP.
Hess (W, 2-0) struck out 10 over 7.0 scoreless innings and did not allow a hit until Willy Adames singled to lead off the bottom of the seventh. At one point the Tides' righty struck out five-of-six batters and set down 17 consecutive.
Adames reached base with a walk in the first and a single in the seventh, marking the only Durham batter to reach base against Hess.
Joe McCarthy singled off of reliever Asher Wojciechowski in the top of the eighth for the Bulls' second hit. Durham dropped to second place in the South Division, a-half game back of Norfolk.
Norfolk scored an unearned run in the top of the first inning, and added two runs in the fourth and three runs in the fifth to make it a 6-0 game. In the ninth the Tides added seven runs, including a grand slam by DJ Stewart to extend the lead to the final score of 13-0.
The Bulls (17-13) face the Tides (17-12) for game three-of-four Wednesday night at Durham Bulls Athletic Park. Durham sends to the mound Ryan Weber (0-0, 1.76) against Norfolk's Chris Lee (0-0, 9.00) with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
