Bulls Drop Both Ends of Doubleheader in Charlotte

Charlotte takes series 3-1
August 1, 2014

CHARLOTTE, NC - The Durham Bulls dropped both games of a modified doubleheader Friday night, falling 7-1 and 4-3 to the Charlotte Knights at BB&T Ballpark.

In game one - the completion of Thursday's suspended game - the Bulls fell 7-1. After falling behind 3-0 after 2 ½ innings Thursday, Durham clawed a run back in the fourth inning on an RBI single from Jeremy Moore.

However Charlotte would counter with a run in the sixth inning to take a 4-1 lead, and tacked on three more in the seventh frame to put the game out of reach.

Matt Zaleski (2-0) earned the win in relief, tossing two scoreless innings and striking out two, while southpaw Mike Montgomery (9-4) took the loss, allowing three runs on four hits in two innings on Thursday.

The Knights earned the win in the seven-inning nightcap as well, walking off with a 4-3 decision in the bottom of the seventh.

With two outs and runners on first and second, Dan Black singled to center field, driving in Avisail Garcia as the Knights took the series three games to one.

Charlotte hopped on the board in the second inning when Michael Taylor led off with a solo dinger. In the fourth, the Bulls took their first lead, scoring a pair of runs when Mike Fontenot and Mayo Acosta each walked with the bases loaded.

In the bottom of the fourth Charlotte came back with a run to tie the ballgame, then took the lead in the fifth inning when Matt Davidson walked with the bases loaded. However the Bulls countered in the sixth inning when Justin Christian doubled to left, scoring Mike Fontenot and tying the game.

Donnie Veal (3-4) earned the win despite blowing the save, while Steve Geltz (2-3) suffered the loss, allowing the winning run to score in the seventh.

The Bulls continue their eight-game road trip with the opener of a four-game set Saturday night against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs. RHP Matt Andriese (11-5, 3.58) goes for Durham opposite RHP Sean O'Sullivan (4-9, 4.77) for Lehigh Valley. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m.
