Tristan Gray, who hit 71 home runs over his three-year career for the Durham Bulls, hit a three-run home run in his first at-bat against his former team to send the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp past Durham 5-3 on Tuesday night at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
Durham (1-3) trailed 5-0 after 4 ½ innings before pressuring the Jumbo Shrimp (2-2) the rest of the game. In the final four innings, the Bulls had eight baserunners, but hit into three double plays, including a line out in the last of the ninth with the bases loaded where Alex Jackson was thrown out at the plate to end the game.
The Bulls closed to within 5-3 with three runs in the fifth thanks to a two-run double by Niko Goodrum followed by a run-scoring double by Tristan Peters.
Jake Odorizzi (L, 0-1) suffered the loss, allowing four runs across four innings. Odorizzi, a 74-game winner in the major leagues, made his first start in a Durham uniform since 2013 before the majority of his 10-year major league career began with the Tampa Bay Rays.
Durham’s six-game homestand continues Wednesday, April 5th at 6:35 PM ET against the Jumbo Shrimp. Joe Rock is slated to start for the Bulls.
