Erie Offense Blanked for Birdsong in Series Opener

The SeaWolves (24-20) were shut out for the third time this season in a 5-0 loss in the series opener against Richmond (23-23).
The Flying Squirrels broke onto the scoreboard first in the fourth against Erie starter Garrett Burhenn. After a walk and a hit batter, Jairo Pomares doubled home both runners with one out. He then scored on Vaun Brown’s sacrifice fly, making it 3-0.
Burhenn was knocked out of the game when Victor Bericoto blasted a solo home run in the fifth, making it 4-0 Richmond.
The Erie starter allowed four runs on four hits with three walks in 4.2 innings. Burhenn set a new season-high with nine strikeouts, one shy of his career mark.
Andy Thomas’ RBI single against Garrett Hill in the seventh inning extended Richmond’s lead to 5-0.
Erie was held off the scoreboard in Hayden Birdsong’s six innings. Birdsong (4-1) earned the win while Burhenn (1-1) took the loss.
Trei Cruz notched his fourth consecutive multi-hit game in the loss for Erie.
