The first place Erie SeaWolves used late inning heroics as they battled from behind and walked off on the Reading Fightin Phils, 5-4, in 10 innings on Wednesday night at UPMC Park. The victory, coupled with a Bowie win, keeps the SeaWolves two games up on the Baysox in the Western Division.
The Phils struck first in the top of the first inning against Erie starter Anthony Castro. Luke Williams led off and reached on an Isaac Paredes throwing error. He moved to third on a groundout and scored on a wild pitch for a 1-0 lead.
Reading added onto the lead in the second. Josh Stephen led off with a walk and moved into scoring position a Nick Maton base hit. He scored on a Jose Gomez sacrifice fly.
The Phils again extended their lead in the third Alec Bohm, Darick Hall and Stephen all singled to load the bases. Bohm scored on a Maton groundout and Hall scored on an Arquimedes Gamboa base hit for a 4-0 advantage.
The SeaWolves got on the board in the fourth against Reading starter Connor Seabold. Derek Hill led off with a base hit and Isaac Paredes followed with a two-run home run to left. The home run for Paredes was his 10th and it trimmed the Reading lead down to a pair of runs.
The game remained 4-2 into the ninth inning against reliever Jeff Singer. Cam Gibson led off and drew a walk to bring the tying run to the plate. Chance Numata singled to left with one out, putting the tying run aboard for the top of the lineup. The knock for Numata was his second of the game as he extended his hitting streak to 13 consecutive games. Hill brought home Gibson with a base hit to make it a one-run contest. With two outs, Jose Azocar brought home the game tying run on an infield single that bled into shallow right, sending the game into extra innings.
The Erie bullpen was rock solid the entire game. A pair of relievers in Mark Ecker and Zac Houston held the Fightins off the board over four innings. Drew Carlton came in to work in the top of the 10th. With the free runner on second in Williams, Carlton held Reading without a run, giving Erie a chance to win the game in the last of the 10th.
In the bottom half of the inning, Dylan Rosa began as the free runner on second against reliever Addison Russ. Rosa advanced to third on a wild pitch with Daniel Pinero at the plate. Pinero lined a game-winning single to center, plating Rosa, capping the comeback win.
Carlton (3-3) earned the win for the SeaWolves while Russ (4-6) took the loss for Reading.
The win was the SeaWolves first of the season when trailing after eight inning and the team's eight walk-off win of the year.
The SeaWolves will look for the series sweep on Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. RHP Matt Manning (10-4, 2.57 ERA) takes the mound for Erie against RHP Colton Eastman (1-0, 2.16 ERA).
