The SeaWolves could not get the bats going on Saturday night at UPMC Park as they dropped the middle game of the series to the Binghamton Rumble Ponies 6-2.
Binghamton struck first in the top of the second inning against SeaWolves starter Kyle Funkhouser. Jhoan Urena walked with one out and scored on a two-out Levi Michael base hit for a 1-0 lead.
The Rumble Ponies extended their lead in the top of the third. Jeff McNeil reached on a one-out errir and Peter Alonso followed with an opposite field, two-run home run for a 3-0 lead.
The SeaWolves cut into the Ponies lead in the last of the sixth against starter Scott Copeland. Dominic Ficociello led off with a walk, his second of the game. With one out, Binghamton summoned reliever Gerson Bautista to face Josh Lester. Lester singled to right, moving Ficociello into scoring position. Kenny Wilson singled home Ficociello making it 3-1. Kade Scivicque then singled to right, loading the bases for A.J. Simcox. Simcox lifted a sacrifice fly to right, plating Lester, cutting the Poines lead down to a run at 3-2. The 'Wolves would get no closer.
In the top of the seventh, Binghamton went ahead 4-2 when McNiel connected on a solo home run off of reliever Jeff Thompson.
The Rumble Ponies would put the game away in the top of the ninth against reliever Mark Ecker. Ecker had worked a perfect eighth with a pair of strikeouts but struggled in his second inning of work. John Mora led off with a single and was doubled home by McNiel making it 5-2. Matt Oberste singled home McNeil with two outs for a 6-2 Ponies lead.
Copeland (1-0) earned the win in his Binghamton debut. He allowed a run on two hits with four walks and three strikeouts in 5.1 innings.
Funkhouser (0-2) took the loss for the SeaWolves allowing three runs, two earned, on five hits with four walks and five strikeouts in a season-high 5.2 innings of work.
The SeaWolves will look to avoid a series sweep on Sunday afternoon at UPMC Park at 1:35 p.m. Lefty Tyler Alexander (2-0, 2.30 ERA) takes the mound for Erie against RHP Joseph Shaw (0-2, 5.87 ERA).
