The SeaWolves kept their trend of first-inning offense going, pushing three runs across in the opening frame. Ryan Kreidler opened with a solo home run, his eighth of the season. Spencer Torkelson drew a walk, and Dillon Dingler reached on an error to extend the inning. Kerry Carpenter hit a sacrifice fly to deep center field to drive in Torkelson, and Josh Lester singled to right field to bring in Dingler and finish the early rally.
Erie tagged Thomas Ponticelli for another pair of runs in the fourth inning when Carpenter and Lester both doubled. Carpenter scored on the latter double, and Lester scored on a double play later in the inning. Brady Policelli knocked Ponticelli out of the game in the sixth inning when he doubled to score Lester, giving Erie their sixth run.
A.J. Ladwig worked five innings for the SeaWolves in his third start against Akron this season. He did surrender a run in the second inning of off a walk and two singles, and later a solo home run by Alex Call, but was still able to earn the win.
Ruben Garcia was roughed up out of the Erie bullpen. Akron knocked three straight hits to start Garcia’s outing, two singles and a double, and eventually scored three runs to trim Erie’s lead to one run. Gerson Moreno took over for Erie in the eighth inning, and logged two scoreless frames to earn the save.
Akron got a perfect outing from reliever Skylar Arias, who retired all five batters he faced. Juan Mota continued to work through the Erie offense until the ninth inning, when Erie broke through for four hits and three more runs. Danny Woodrow, Riley Greene, Dingler, and Andre Lipcius each drove in runs in the frame, vaulting Erie to the win.
Erie and Akron complete their seven game set on Sunday at Canal Park, with the first pitch scheduled for 2:05 p.m. Erie will return to UPMC Park on June 29 when they face Reading in a six game series.
