The SeaWolves were shut out by the Harrisburg Senators, 2-0, on Tuesday night at FNB Field in the series opener.
Harrisburg took the lead in the bottom of the second against Erie starter Tyler Alexander. Zach Collier led off with a triple and scored on an Austin Davidson groundout for a 1-0 lead.
The Senators added to their lead in the bottom of the third. Daniel Johnson, Stephen Perez and Dan Gamache started the inning with three consecutive singles. Taylor Gushue followed with a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Johnson for a 2-0 lead. Alexander got out of the jam by inducing a double play off the bat of Drew Ward.
Harrisburg starter Kyle McGowin (1-0) earned the win for the Senators and controlled the game from the outset. Josh Lester connected on a two-out single in the first inning and it would be the only baserunner for Erie through the first six. McGowin retired 16 consecutive batters before giving up a leadoff walk to Dominic Ficociello in the seventh. McGowin struck out a career-high 10 batters and walked just one while facing two over the minimum in seven innings of work.
Kaleb Fleck worked a perfect eight inning and Bryan Harper worked a scoreless ninth, earning his second save.
Alexander (3-1) took the loss for the SeaWolves allowing two runs on eight hits with two walks and three strikeouts in 5.1 innings of work. The lefty worked out of several jams and limited damage but could not get help from the offense.
Erie was limited to just three hits in the game. Lester's first inning single and singles from Jacob Robson and Sergio Alcántara. The SeaWolves lone baserunner in scoring position came in the top of the ninth inning when Ficociello walked with two outs and reached second on defensive indifference.
The SeaWolves and Senators meet in the middle game of the series on Wednesday night at FNB Field at 6:30 p.m. Righty Beau Burrows (5-2, 2.21 ERA) takes the mound for the SeaWolves looking for his fifth straight win against RHP Luis Reyes (3-4, 4.78 ERA).
