Sean Dwyer Takes Home Run Derby Crown

August 6, 2013

Everett, Wash. - Sean Dwyer of the Tri-City Dust Devils won the 2013 NWL Home Run Derby, presented by Safeco Insurance. The lefty outfielder hit three homers in the first round and clubbed two in the second to win the event, which was part of All-Star festivities at Everett Memorial Stadium Tuesday. Phillips Castillo of the host Everett AquaSox came in second and Hunter Renfroe of the Eugene Emeralds was third.

Dwyer got on a hot streak in the first round, bashing three consecutive homers to finish in second place in the round. Renfroe hit four long balls, including an impressive opposite field line drive that hit off the netting behind the wall. Castillo also hit four homers to tie with Renfroe and advance to the finals.

Dwyer batted first in the final round, but was not rattled by the grand stage, hitting two shots to right field to take an early lead and put the pressure on the other two finalists. Renfroe appeared a bit tired from his first round show, and was unable to hit any homers in the second round.

Castillo also struggled early in the finals, but hit his first homer with one out remaining to give himself a chance to tie Dwyer, but it was not to be, as he hit a shallow fly to left to end the round and give the crown to Dwyer.

The Dust Devils took home the Derby title despite having a league-low 11 home runs as a team.

The other contestants in the 2013 Home Run Derby were Hillsboro's Yogey Perez-Ramos, Vancouver's L.B. Dantzler, and Eugene's Trae Santos, who each hit one homer, as well as Everett's Justin Seager and Salem-Keizer's Sam Eberle, who did not go yard in the first round.

Dwyer took home $500 and the Everett Boys & Girls Club picked up a $2,500 donation from Marysville Anderson Insurance from his performance.
