Woodpeckers Set Franchise Record With Seventh Straight Win

Fayetteville, NC - The Fayetteville Woodpeckers (65-53, 33-20 2nd Half) set a franchise record on Tuesday night in their return home, winning a seventh straight game in a 3-2 final over the Salem RidgeYaks (52-67, 27-27 2nd Half) in the series opener at Segra Stadium. With the win, the Woodpeckers now have a 5.0 first-place lead in the division with 12 games remaining in the regular season.

Fayetteville was forced to play from behind early after Josue Brito connected for a two-run homer against Aubrey Smith in the top of the first inning. After the shaky start, Smith settled in and completed five innings, also retiring nine of the last 11 batters he faced.

The comeback was kick-started in the bottom of the fifth when Arturo Flores launched a solo homer over the left-field berm and cut the game to 2-1. It was Flores’ second home run in the last three games and extended his single-season franchise record to 17 long-balls.

Fayetteville scored again in the sixth and tied the game at 2-2 on an Aaron Piasecki RBI double that scored Owen Nowak. Nowak, who was named Carolina League Player of the Week on Monday, delivered the go-ahead swing in the bottom of the seventh, a double to right-center field that scored Logan Hughes for the 3-2 advantage.

Brandon Cassedy (W, 4-0) was positioned for the win after delivering three critical innings of scoreless relief during the comeback. The undrafted free agent out of George Mason lowered his season ERA to 2.48 and struck out three while allowing just one hit.

Mick Uebelhor (SV, 1) closed down the game in the bottom of the ninth, working around a single to record his first professional save.

The series continues with a doubleheader scheduled for Wednesday afternoon. Gates to Segra Stadium open at 4:35 PM first pitch in game one. RHP Juan Fraide is projected to start the first game for Fayetteville and RHP Jose Serrano will get the ball for game two.
