Trey Dombroski Named MLB Pipeline's Astros Pitching Prospect of the Year

Woodpeckers left-handed pitcher Trey Dombroski earned recognition over the weekend from MLB.com and MLB Pipeline as the Houston Astros Pitching Prospect of the Year following a stellar 2023 season in Fayetteville.
During his first professional season, Dombroski topped the Carolina League in strikeouts (148 in 119 innings), strikeout rate (11.2 per nine innings), opponent average (.216) and WHIP (1.12) while finishing second in ERA (3.71). His 148 total strikeouts set the new single-season franchise record, surpassing Shawn Dubin’s previous high mark of 132 during 2019. Dombroski joins former Woodpeckers' outfielder Joey Loperfido who was named the Astros Position Player of the year by Pipeline.

The 22-year-old New Jersey native garnered awards throughout the regular season, earning Carolina League Pitcher of the Week on August 28th following a career-best 11-strikeout performance against Down East. He recorded three hitless outings during the year and recorded at least seven strikeouts in ten of 26 total games.
Dombroski was acquired by the Astros in the fifth round of the 2022 MLB draft out of Monmouth University where he also set the school’s single-season strikeout record and was named MAAC Pitcher of the Year in 2021.
