FREDERICK, MD – The World Baseball Classic (WBC) concluded pool play on Wednesday night and only eight teams remain in the quest for a World Baseball Classic championship.

Four former Keys players competed in the tournament including infielders Manny Machado and Zach Dezenzo, left-handed pitcher Alex Wells, and right-handed pitcher Dean Kremer. Additionally, several top Orioles prospects have participated in the field including top-ranked outfielder Enrique Bradfield Jr.

Machado guided the Dominican Republic team to a quarterfinals appearance after recording three hits in four games. Along with his .250 average, he has posted a .526 on-base percentage after drawing six walks while striking out only three times.

Wells pitched in two games for Australia during pool play and finished with six innings pitched and allowing only two runs. He also finished second on the team in strikeouts with nine and gave up two walks, helping his home country finish third in Pool C behind Japan and Korea.

Kremer finished the World Baseball Classic with one start on his tab and helped record the first shutout in Team Isreal history, throwing 4.1 innings scoreless against Nicaragua on Sunday night. He also recorded four strikeouts and allowed one walk and was the lone starting pitcher on the Isreal roster to record a 0.00 ERA.

As for Dezenzo, he played an integral role helping his home country finish with a 4-0 record, which included a historic win over the United States on Tuesday night in Houston. In four games, he has recorded three hits and an RBI, but most importantly provided insurance in the middle infield alongside star infielders Vinnie Pasquantino and Andrew Fischer.

The semifinal round of the World Baseball Classic begins on Friday with Korea taking on the Dominican Republic at 6:30 p.m. at LoanDepot Park in Miami, Florida. The WBC Championship game will take place on Tuesday, March 17 at 8 p.m. in Miami. All remaining WBC games can be streamed on FOX, FS1, or FS2.
