MIDLAND, Mich. – The Dayton Dragons (2-0) defeated the Great Lakes Loons (0-2) Wednesday night, 4-0, at Dow Diamond. The Loons tallied just two hits, while Dayton scored four runs on seven hits.

Fans rallied to Dow Diamond for Bark in the Park Night, presented by Creation Coffee. Fans can bring their pups every Wednesday night all summer long and enjoy special canine-friendly seating areas.

Starter Eduardo Salazar (1-0) lasted five innings of scoreless work for Dayton, both walking and striking out three. Great Lakes southpaw Robinson Ortiz (0-1) lasted 2 1/3 innings, allowing one run on four hits, walking and striking out five. Ortiz, 21, is one of the 14 returning Loons this season.

With two on and two out in the 5th, Dragons centerfielder Brian Rey launched his first homerun of the season, on his way to a 2-for-4 night. Rey’s three run homerun was the fifth for Dayton in the last two nights.

An eventful 5th continued, as Loons designated hitter Ryan Ward connected on his first double of the season. Ward finished 1-2 with a walk.

Loons relievers Braidyn Fink and Jack Little both made impressive debuts, giving up no hits and no runs in a combined four innings, striking out four. Both were Dodger draft picks in the 2019 MLB Draft. Little returns from 2019, while Fink made his pro ball debut Wednesday night.

In the last two nights, Loons batters are a combined 5-57 (.088) at the plate, 2-18 with runners in scoring position.

A pair of right-handers get their first start of the season for both clubs tomorrow. Juan Morillo starts for the Loons against Dayton’s Noah Davis, first pitch scheduled for 6:05 PM. Gates open at 5 for Thirsty Thursday at Dow Diamond.
