BROOKLYN, NY-In a game that saw four lead changes, the Brooklyn Cyclones scored six runs in their final four at-bats to defeat the Hudson Valley Renegades 7-5 Wednesday night at MCU Park.
The game was decided in the eighth inning after the Renegades used a bases-loaded walk from leftfielder Michael Smith to tie the game.. With the bases still loaded and only one out, Cyclones relief pitcher Yeudy Colon struck out shortstop Ford Proctor and got centerfielder Tanner Dodson to fly out to right to limit the damage.
In the bottom-half, Brooklyn got a one-out RBI single to center from shortstop Oliver Pascual to score second baseman Chandler Avant from second to give Brooklyn the lead for good. Later, catcher Carlos Sanchez brought in Pascual on a single to right to give Brooklyn the 7-5 advantage.
The Renegades seemed to have the game in hand after they plated two runs in the sixth to take a 4-2 lead. Two singles and a walk loaded the bases with one out when Smith drew another bases-loaded walk to push Hudson Valley in front. Proctor then lined a single to center to score designated hitter Erik Ostberg from third.
The Cyclones would respond by scoring the next three runs of the game. In the bottom of the sixth, Brooklyn got an unearned run after rightfielder Dave Miranda reached second on a one-out fielding error by Hudson Valley first baseman Jacson McGowan. After a wild pitch moved Miranda to third, he scored on a lined double to left by Avant. In the seventh, Brooklyn scored twice more on a two-run homer to right by third baseman Jose Brizuela to put Brooklyn up one.
Brooklyn got on the board in the second inning thanks to another unearned run. Miranda started the frame by reaching second on a dropped flyball from Hudson Valley rightfielder Marvin Malone. After Miranda moved to third on a groundout, Pascual brought him home on a lined single to right.
Hudson Valley would storm back with two runs in the fifth. A one-out, bases-loaded sacrifice fly from centerfielder Michael Smith tied the game, then a single to center by Proctor scored Ostberg from second to give the Renegades a 2-1 lead.
Brooklyn retied the game in the bottom-half of the fifth. With two out, Brizuela drew a walk then scored on a double to center from leftfielder Wagner Lagrange.
There were 22 hits between the two teams, including 12 from Hudson Valley. Ostberg and third baseman Trey Hair had three hits apiece and a scored a run, while Hair also registered a double. Malone and second baseman Garrett Giovannelli chipped in with two hits, including an RBI from Giovannelli.
Brooklyn got two hits apiece from Medina, Pascual, Avant, and Brizuela. Pascual and Brizuela each drove in two runs, while Medina picked up a couple of doubles.
Getting the win for Brooklyn was Colon (2-0) who allowed a run in his lone inning of work. The loss went to Renegades reliever Kyle Goodbrand (0-1) who allowed four earned runs on five hits in 2.1 innings. Closer Mac Lozer recorded his second save.
Hudson Valley will try to salvage one game of their series against Brooklyn tomorrow. First-pitch is set for 7:00p.m. Righty Easton McGee (1-0, 0.00 ERA) will start for Hudson Valley against fellow righty Kyle Wilson (0-0, 0.00 ERA) for Brooklyn.
The Renegades kick off the home portion of their season when they face the Vermont Lake Monsters on Thursday, June 21 from Dutchess Stadium.
