LOWELL, MA- Renegades designated hitter Tanner Dodson went 3-4 while driving in the game-winning run as the Hudson Valley Renegades stopped a three-game slide with a 3-1 win over the Lowell Spinners Saturday night at Edward A. LeLacheur Park. Renegades pitchers also struck out 12 Spinners in the win.
Each team used the longball to get their first runs on the board. In the second, Lowell took the lead when catcher Kole Cottam led off with a solo shot to right centerfield to put the Spinners up 1-0. However, in the third, Hudson Valley centerfielder Jake Stone started the inning with a solo homerun of his own to right to tie the game. The homers were the second of the year for each batter.
Things stayed that way until the eighth when the Renegades collected their last two runs en route to victory. Second baseman Justin Bridgman started the inning with a single to left, which set the stage for Dodson who drilled a triple to left to give Hudson Valley a one-run lead. Dodson scored two batters later when catcher Chris Betts lined a double to right to give the Renegades a 3-1 lead.
From there it was all about Hudson Valley's hurlers as starter Blake Pflughaupt and relievers Simon Rosenblum-Larson and B.J. Myers combined to hold the Spinners to a run on seven hits. Pflughaupt struck out six over 4.2 innings on six hits, while Rosenblum-Larson punched out six more in 3.1 frames on a single hit to get the win and move to 1-1 on the year. Though he didn't strike anybody out, Myers nailed down his second save by pitching a scoreless ninth.
Taking the loss for Lowell was Andrew Politi (0-1) who allowed the two go-ahead runs in the eighth on four hits. He also struck out six in 2.1 innings.
Dodson was the only batter for Hudson Valley to have more than one hit as the Renegades collected eight base-knocks for the game. Of the seven hits for the Spinners, first baseman Devlin Granburg collected two singles in four at-bats.
Also picking up two singles in four plate appearances for Lowell was designated hitter and longtime MLB infielder Brandon Phillips. Signed by the Red Sox to a minor league deal on June 27th, Phillips is a 16-year major league veteran who split time with the Braves and Angels last season batting .285 with 13 homers and 60 RBI. Saturday was his first game action since last season. In addition to the singles, Phillips struck out swinging against Rosenblum-Larson and flied out to center with two men on to end the game.
The Renegades continue their three-game series with the Spinners tomorrow. First-pitch is set for 5:35. Righty Miller Hogan (1-0, 0.00 ERA) will be on the hill for the Renegades against southpaw Brian Brown (0-2, 2.53 ERA) of the Spinners.
Hudson Valley returns home on July 11th when they kickoff a three-game series and homestand against the West Virginia Black Bears. Tickets can be purchased online at hvrenegades.com or by calling the ticket office at 845-838-0094.
