BROOKLYN, NY-Two errors and five runs, three of them unearned, helped propel the Brooklyn Cyclones to a 9-7 win in game one of a a three-game series over the Hudson Valley Renegades Monday night at MCU Park.
The game was tied at one entering the inning when Brooklyn put runners at first and second with one out against Hudson Valley starter Nick Padilla. Rightfielder Jose Miguel Medina roped a triple to center to score both runners and give the Cyclones a 3-1 lead. After a groundout and walk put runners at the corners with two away, Renegades third baseman Justin Bridgman dropped a foul pop that would have ended the inning. That kept the at-bat alive for shortstop Chase Chambers who reached on an infield single to short, scoring Medina. On the play, Renegades shortstop Tyler Frank threw wild of first base which allowed both remaining runners to advance to second and third. After a walk loaded the bases, Padilla was lifted for reliever Nick Lee who hit a batter and threw a wild pitch to allow the final two runs of the inning to score as Brooklyn took a commanding 6-1 lead.
The Cyclones added insurance runs in in the fifth and seventh innings. Centerfielder Ross Adolph scored from third on a fielder's choice groundball to first from shortstop Oliver Pascual in the fifth, while first baseman Dionis Paulino drove in catcher Carlos Sanchez on a single to left in the seventh to make the score 8-1 Brooklyn.
The Renegades tried to claw back into the game with three runs in the eighth. After two singles and a walk loaded the bases with one out, catcher Erik Ostberg drew a walk and designated hitter Allen Smoot grounded into a fielder's choice to first to pull the Renegades to 8-4. However, a 6-4-3 double play by Bridgman ended the threat with Hudson Valley down four.
In the bottom half, second baseman Chandler Avant laced a double to left to score Adolph from first and up the Cyclones lead to 9-4. The Renegades made one last push in the ninth as a bases-loaded, two-out double to center by first baseman Jacson McGowan brought Hudson Valley to within two. However, Cyclones reliever Mac Lozer came in and got Ostberg to line out to right to end the game.
Brooklyn plated the game's first run in the first. With two out and runners at second and third, third baseman Jose Brizuela laid down a bunt single to third to give the Cyclones a 1-0 lead. The Renegades tied the game in the second on a one-out, bases-loaded sacrifice fly to left from second baseman Ford Proctor.
After getting two singles to start the game, Hudson Valley was held hitless by Brooklyn pitchers until a one-out single by centerfielder Michael Smith in the eighth. The Renegades had seven hits with Smith, Proctor and McGowan collecting two apiece with McGowan driving in three runs.
Brooklyn had 14 hits including a 4-5 performance from Medina who tripled, drove in two runs, and scored another. Brizuela and Chambers chipped in with two hits each and an RBI.
Getting the win in relief for Brooklyn was Billy Oxford (1-0) who struck out one in 1.2 scoreless innings after starter Jason Vilera struck out six and surrendered a run on two hits in four frames. Padilla (0-1) took the loss for Hudson Valley after allowing six runs, three earned, on seven hits in 1.2 innings. The save for Lozer's first. The game suffered a 63 minute rain delay in the sixth.
Hudson Valley faces Brooklyn in game two of their three-game series tomorrow. First-pitch is set for 7:00p.m. Righty Easton McGee (1-0, 0.00 ERA) will start for Hudson Valley against fellow righty Ryan McAuliffe (0-0, 0.00 ERA) for Brooklyn.
The Renegades kick off the home portion of their season when they face the Vermont Lake Monsters on Thursday, June 21 from Dutchess Stadium.
