Jacksonville wins third straight with 5-1 win over Memphis

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Off the back of a strong start from right-hander Cody Mincey,the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp notched their eighth win in their last 10 games with a 5-1 victory over the Memphis Redbirds Thursday night at 121 Financial Ballpark.

Jacksonville (57-45) took the lead in the fourth against Memphis (54-47) starter Connor Thomas (L, 5-5). With one out, Brian Miller singled and stole second. Victor Victor Mesa grounded out but Miller advanced to third. Willians Astudillo walked and Norel González was hit by a pitch, loading the bases. Ray-Patrick Didder worked a walk and Miller scored, putting Jacksonville up 1-0.

The Jumbo Shrimp tacked on to their lead in the bottom of the fifth. Jordan Groshans led off with a single and then scored on a double from Jerar Encarnacion, making the score 2-0. Two batters later, Miller singled to put runners at the corners and Mesa reached on an infield single that scored Encarnacion to give Jacksonville a 3-0 lead. With runners at first and second, Astudillo singled, which allowed Miller to score the fourth run for Jacksonville.

The final tally for Jacksonville was put on the board in the sixth inning. With one out, Groshans doubled and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Following a strikeout, Ryan Lavarnway walked and Miller smacked a single to score Groshans as the Jumbo Shrimp increased their advantage to 5-0.

Memphis got a run back in the top of the seventh. Roberto Baldoquin and Scott Hurst swatted back-to-back singles with one out. Conner Capel flew out but Baldoquin tagged up to third and then scored on a single from Moises Gomez to cut the deficit to 5-1.

The Jumbo Shrimp got a great effort from their pitching staff. In his home debut, Mincey(W, 1-1) tossed 5.1 scoreless frames, allowing four hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Colton Hock allowed one run on three hits with one strikeout in 1.2 innings and Parker Bugg shut the door with two scoreless innings with one walk and two punchouts.

Jacksonville and Memphis continue their series Friday night. LHP Matthew Kent (5-8, 5.57 ERA) starts for the Jumbo Shrimp and the Redbirds will counter with RHP Jake Woodford (2-3, 3.41 ERA). Coverage begins at 6:50 p.m. on MiLB.tv, ESPN 690 and ESPN690.com.

Gates open at 6:00 p.m. on a Red Shirt Friday. Jacksonville will be sporting their red Bold City jerseys in support of the military.
