JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Miami Marlins third baseman Jake Burger will begin an injury rehabilitation assignment presented by H2 Health on Wednesday for the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp, when the club hosts the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders in a 7:05 p.m. contest from 121 Financial Ballpark.

Burger was placed on the injured list on April 15 with an intercostal injury. In 16 games with the Marlins prior to his injury, the 28-year-old was batting .228/.281/.421/.702 with two doubles, three home runs, 15 RBIs and eight runs scored.

A St. Louis native, Burger was originally selected by the Chicago White Sox with the 11th overall pick in the 2017 draft out of Missouri State University. After hitting .263/.336/.412/.749 between the Rookie-level AZL White Sox and Low-A Kannapolis in 51 games, Burger was invited to 2018 Spring Training with the White Sox. However, injuries forced him to miss both the 2018 and 2019 seasons before the pandemic wiped out the 2020 campaign.

Burger finally returned to action in 2021 with Triple-A Charlotte, slashing .274/.332/.513/.845 with 16 doubles, two triples, 18 home runs, 54 RBIs and 46 runs scored before earning his first promotion to the major leagues. He made his MLB debut on July 2, 2021 for the White Sox at Detroit’s Comerica Park.

After playing with the South Siders in both 2022 and the start of the 2023 season, Chicago traded Burger to Miami on August 1, 2023 in exchange for left-handed pitcher Jake Eder. He hit .303/.355/.505/.860 in 53 games with the Marlins, collecting 13 doubles, nine home runs, 28 RBIs and 27 runs scored to help Miami to its first playoff appearance in a full season since 2003.

Burger is the fifth Marlins player to embark on an injury rehabilitation assignment with Jacksonville, following right-hander Edward Cabrera (March 31-April 15), left-hander Braxton Garrett (April 5-present), catcher Christian Bethancourt, April 19-24) and right-hander JT Chargois (April 21-27).
