JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Miami Marlins’ catcher Christian Bethancourt will begin an injury rehabilitation assignment for the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp in Friday’s 7:05 p.m. contest against the Norfolk Tides from 121 Financial Ballpark.

Bethancourt appeared in 11 games in 2024 for Miami before being placed on the 10-day injured list on April 15 (retroactive to April 14) with a viral illness.

A native of Panama City, Panama, the Marlins acquired Bethancourt on December 10, 2023 in a trade with the Cleveland Guardians in exchange for cash. He began his career with the Atlanta Braves in 2008 after being signed as a non-drafted free agent. After working his way up through the Braves minor league system, Bethancourt made his major league debut on September 29, 2013 against the Philadelphia Phillies at Turner Field.

Over his eight-year big league career, Bethancourt has played in 377 games, slashing .227/.257/.354/.611 with 30 home runs and 114 RBIs. Behind the plate, he has totaled 2,208.2 innings while throwing out 32.7% of would-be base stealers.

Bethancourt is the third Marlins player to embark on an injury rehabilitation assignment with Jacksonville (Edward Cabrera, March 31-April 15; Braxton Garrett, April 5-present). In 2023, the Jumbo Shrimp had 15 overall injury rehab assignments.
