Six-run fifth sinks Jacksonville 9-4

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Otto López recorded two extra base hits and Jonah Bride reached base four times, but the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp fell to the Charlotte Knights 9-4 Sunday afternoon at 121 Financial Ballpark. Trailing 4-3, Charlotte (5-10) broke the game open with a six-run fifth inning against Jacksonville (8-7).

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Otto López recorded two extra base hits and Jonah Bride reached base four times, but the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp fell to the Charlotte Knights 9-4 Sunday afternoon at 121 Financial Ballpark.

Trailing 4-3, Charlotte (5-10) broke the game open with a six-run fifth inning against Jacksonville (8-7). Colson Montgomery started the inning off with a walk. He swiped second two batters later to put himself in scoring position. Chuckie Robinson walked and Zach DeLoach was hit by a pitch to load the bases. With two outs, Carlos Pérez laced a two-run single to give the Knights the lead. After a wild pitch, Wynton Bernard drove in DeLoach and Perez on a single to make it 6-4. Angelo Castellano followed with a single, which put runners on first and second. Rafael Ortega walked, which loaded the bases for the second time in the inning. Danny Mendick delivered Charlotte’s third two-run single of the fifth to make it 9-4.

Both offenses were stifled the rest of the game and the Knight’s wrapped up a series split against the Jumbo Shrimp.

Charlotte offense got things started in the second. With one out, Pérez walked and Bernard followed with a single. With runners at first and second, Castellano drew a walk to load the bases. Ortega brought home Perez on a sacrifice fly to put Charlotte ahead 1-0.

The Jumbo Shrimp took their first lead of the game in the third. Marty Costes cracked a leadoff double and scored on a Troy Johnston RBI double. Bride and Tristan Gray worked back-to-back walks to put three runners on. Dane Myers plated Johnston on a fielder's choice, which gave Jacksonville a 2-1 advantage.

A leadoff walk for Charlotte in the fourth put pressure on the Jumbo Shrimp. Pérez continued a strong offensive day with a two-run home run, pushing the Knights in front 3-2.

Jacksonville responded in the bottom of the inning. After a ground out, José Devers tapped an infield single to third. Costes followed with an RBI double that tied the game. López followed with another RBI double to put the Jumbo Shrimp ahead, 4-3.

Jacksonville welcomes Norfolk for a six-game set starting at 11:05 a.m. Tuesday at 121 Financial Ballpark. The Jumbo Shrimp will hand the ball to LHP Patrick Monteverde (2-0, 2.70). Coverage begins at 10:50 a.m. on Bally Live, MLB.tv and MiLB.tv.

Gates open at 10 a.m. for Education Day presented by EverBank. School kids from the First Coast are invited to come out for a fun day at the ballpark.
