(July 23, 2017) - Luis Gonzalez hit his first career professional home run, but the Intimidators fell to the Columbia Fireflies 3-1 on Sunday night at Intimidators Stadium supported by Carolinas HealthCare System. Kannapolis (11-19 Second Half, 50-48) was held scoreless until the ninth inning as Columbia starter Harol Gonzalez earned the complete-game win.
Harol Gonzalez (7-7) allowed one run on seven hits with one walk and seven strikeouts while recording his first career nine-inning complete game. Kannapolis starterDylan Cease (0-2) suffered the loss allowing two runs on two hits while fanning seven and walking three in 4 and 2/3 innings.
The Fireflies opened the scoring in the top of the third inning whenColby Woodmansee walked to lead off the frame, advanced to second on a passed ball and scored on an RBI triple to left field by Vinny Sienna. Up next, Andrew Gimenez grounded out to second scoring Sienna and giving Columbia a 2-0 lead.
The Fireflies expanded upon their advantage in the eighth inning when with two outs,Dash Winningham scored Jacob Zanon on a single to centerfield making it 3-0.
The Intimidators ended an 18-inning scoreless drought when Gonzalez homered over the right-center field wall with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning to make it a 3-1 game. However, with the tying run in the batter's box, a groundball double play ended the evening.
Mitch Roman and Gavin Sheets each recorded two hit performances in the loss. Roman went 2-for-3 with a walk. Sheets went 2-for-4.
