Cedar Rapids swept by Peoria

Cedar Rapids, IA – The Cedar Rapids Kernels were swept for the first time in 2022 on Sunday afternoon as they fell 9-7 to the Peoria Chiefs. Yunior Severino went 3-for-3 with a walk and two RBI while Aaron Sabato blasted a three-run shot as part of a two-hit game to lead the Kernels lineup. Cedar Rapids falls to 55-35, 12-12 in the second half.
Trailing 4-0 through three and a half, the Kernels began to claw back in the bottom of the fourth as Severino and Wander Javier each plated runs with RBI singles. The Chiefs scored three in the next half inning, with Sabato responding by blasting a towering three-run shot out to right to make it 7-5.
Peoria scored a pair of runs in the seventh to extend their lead back to four. Severino and Pat Winkel added run-scoring knocks after the stretch to cut the Kernels deficit back to two, but Cedar Rapids was unable to strike back further as the Peoria bullpen held to close out the sweep.
Tyler Palm threw 2.0 scoreless while covering the eighth and the ninth, retiring six of seven with one punchout.
The Kernels are idle on Monday before opening a six-game series on the road in Appleton on Tuesday evening at 6:40 p.m. CT.
