Weeks Leads The Way in 8-2 Win
Sunday afternoon at Citibank Ballpark and Monday night in Corpus, the 'Hounds had fallen by one run, with the opposition winning the game in the ninth inning of both games. Tuesday, the 'Hounds and Hooks had battled to a 2-2 tie through six innings, and appeared on the way to another "night of drama."
Jermaine Michell tripled to open the seventh, and Jemile Weeks singled to right with what would be the game-winner.
Before the 'Hounds broke the game open, Jason Ray denied a Hooks comeback. After giving up a lead-off double in the last of the seventh ... moments after the 'Hounds had taken the lead ... Ray recorded three straight outs with the tying run in scoring position.
Archie Gilbert then walked to open the eighth and stole second ... and the 'Hounds loaded the bases with one out. After Mitchell struck out, reliever Jared Wells came on to face Weeks, who came through again. Jemile's two-run single made it a 5-2 game ... Matt Sulentic followed with another two-run single, and Alex Valdez capped the 5-run inning with an RBI triple, as the RockHounds ensured there would be no drama on this night.
All nine RockHounds hitters reached base ... with eight scoring and/or driving in a run ... with Weeks' three RBI leadig the way. Also notable was Yung-Chi Chen, who broke out of a miserable slump (7-for-51 entering the game) with a key, RBI triple early in the game and a 2-for-3 night with sacrifice bunt that helped set up the 5-run eighth.
Pedro Figueroa was solid through 5.0 innings, allowing just two runs. Ray picked up the win with two scoreless innings and Justin Souza faced and retired six-in-a-row to end the game.
