Edging back over .500 with a win last night, the Mud Hens were looking to strengthen their grasp on the International League West division lead in another matchup with the Louisville Bats on Wednesday night.
In an offensive outburst that set a season-high for runs scored, Toledo was guided by home runs from JaCoby Jones and John Hicks and ended up crushing the Bats by a score of 16-2.
Warwick Saupold got the start for Toledo and had one of his better outings of the season. He went seven innings and allowed just two earned runs while striking out three batters.
Wendolyn Bautista was his opponent for Louisville and was making his second apperance on the year. He lasted only an inning and two thirds, allowing five earned runs and only one strikeout.
After falling behind in each of the first two games, Louisville was able to get on the board early in this one. A leadoff double by Phillip Ervin and a subsequent infield single put runners on the corners, then a sacrifice fly brought in Ervin to make it 1-0.
The Mud Hens offense was lively early on as well however, as Alex Presley leadoff with a single that set the table for a JaCoby Jones home run to left field. John Hicks followed up with a home run of his own and the game was 3-1 after the first.
A quick inning for Saupold got him through the second, but Bautista was not quite as lucky. Argenis Diaz started things off with a single and Brendan Ryan doubled to score him and Jones added another RBI with a single that scored Ryan and pushed the game to 5-1.
Saupold made quick work of the Bats once again, shutting them down in short order, but once again the Mud Hens were able to strike in the bottom half of the frame. Loading the bases, Bryan Holaday was able to drive in a run with a sacrifice fly and the game was 6-1.
Another 1-2-3 inning, highlighted by a fantastic play at shortstop by Ryan, got Saupold through the fourth, but again the Bats were not quite as fortunate in the bottom of the inning.
Presley ledoff with a double and Efren Navarro drove him in to make it 7-1. Krizan single to drive in a run, and subsequent at bats scored Hicks and two others and the game was 11-1.
Saupold faced three more batters in the fifth and the Mud Hens added to the lead once more when it was their turn at the plate. A leadoff single by Presley was eventually followed up by a groundball by Hicks that scored him and extended the lead to 12-1.
The Bats were able to strike back a bit in the top of the sixth. Beau Amaral lead off the inning with a double and was later driven in on a single by Jesse Winker; with that, the game was 12-2.
For the first time in the game, the Mud Hens were held scoreless throughout an inning in the bottom of the sixth, despite Holaday's second double of the game.
Saupold found his groove again in the 7th with another 1-2-3 inning and Toledo found their bats once again in the bottom of the seventh. Presley ledoff with his second home run of the year and Jones followed it up with his second home run of the game, Omar Infante doubled, and Diaz drove in Krizan to grow the lead to 16-2.
Bruce Rondon took over in the 8th and blew through the Louisville lineup, while Hernan Iribarren took over for Louisville and allowed a triple that completed the cycle for Presley.
Jeff Ferrell came on in the 9th and closed the door to secure the victory.
The Mud Hens series with the Bats closes out on Thursday morning as Drew VerHagen takes the hill. First pitch is scheduled for 10:35 am.
