Dragons Win 3-0 on Opening Night

Dayton, Ohio-Dayton starting pitcher Justice French and two relievers combined on a four-hit shutout as the Dragons defeated the West Michigan Whitecaps 3-0 on opening night at Fifth Third Field on Thursday. A crowd of 8,402 saw the Dragons improve their all-time record in home openers to 8-5.

French allowed only one runner past first base over six innings. He allowed two hits and two walks while striking out eight. Centerville native Dan Jensen tossed a scoreless seventh inning and Ryan Kemp worked the final two frames to record the save for the Dragons. Dayton pitchers combined to strike out 11 batters.

Dayton took a 1-0 lead in the third inning with a two-out rally. After a pair of singles by Junior Arias and Ryan Wright, Kyle Waldrop reached on an infield single as Arias raced in to score from second base to give the Dragons the lead. In the fourth, Steve Selsky scored from first on Juan Perez's triple and Perez scored on Yovan Gonzalez's bloop single to right to close out the scoring.

The Dragons collected nine hits. Perez became the eighth player in Dragons history to collect two triples in a game. Selsky went 3 for 4. Theo Bowe walked twice and stole two bases.

The Dragons host the Whitecaps in the second game of the three-game series on Friday at 7:00 p.m. (WONE 980 AM). Radhames Quezada (ruh-DOM-eez kay-SOD-uh) will start for Dayton against West Michigan's Tommy Collier. The series concludes Saturday at 7:00 p.m. at Fifth Third Field.
