Captains Split Doubleheader, Boone Twirls Game One Complete Game Shutout

(EASTLAKE, OH) - The Lake County Captains (39-35) and Lansing Lugnuts (27-47), kicked off their Fourth of July weekend with 14 innings of baseball, the Captains taking game one 8-0 and the Lugnuts winning game two 4-2.

Game One

Rodney Boone was masterful, completing the fourth complete game in the Midwest League this season. Boone went seven innings allowing no runs off three hits. The southpaw totaled 92 pitches, 62 strikes and gained seven strikeouts. Lansing had in total six batters reach base.

The Lake County offense scored in three separate innings. They posted three runs in the second inning. Mike Amditis drove home Gabriel Rodriguez with an RBI double, Petey Halpin knocked a double down the left-field line scoring Amditis and Joe Naranjo singled to left-field to plate Halpin.

In the fourth, Korey Holland blasted a homer over the left field bleachers. The 22-year-old has three home runs in his last five games played.

The bottom of the sixth saw four more runs come across. Alexfri Planez and Johnathan Rodriguez both extended their hitting streaks Planez to 15 games and Rodriguez to nine, with each lining two-run doubles.

Game Two

The Captains offense started where they left off. Johnathan Rodriguez hit streak grew to 10 games, with a double. Petey Halpin drove him home with a single up the middle.

After a 1-2-3 inning from Doug Nikhazy in the first, the left-hander allowed three hits in the second. The third was a three-run home run for Matt Cross. Nikhazy went six up and six down in the third and fourth. The bottom of the Lansing order tacked on another run in the fourth with a sacrifice fly to center from Cross scoring Patrick McColl

Lake County pulled the deficit to one in the second inning. Milan Tolentino singled to begin the inning and moved to third after a Connor Kokx single and a 4-3 double play. Quentin Holmes stepped up and hit a chopper to short that he beat out to score Tolentino. A lineout to second ended the inning.

From the third to the seventh, the Captains left seven runners on base. In the bottom of the seventh, Lake County loaded the bases after three walks from Joe Naranjo, Johnathan Rodriguez, and Gabriel Rodriguez, a strikeout ended the game.

Lake County and Lansing will conclude the six-game series tomorrow Sunday, July 3 at Classic Park. There will be postgame Sunday Night Fireworks presented by Discount Drug Mart.
