Povich's Performance Not Enough for Norfolk

NORFOLK, Va --- The Norfolk Tides (7-7) fell to the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (9-4), 3-0, on Saturday night at Harbor Park. Cade Povich completed another stellar outing, striking out 10 batters one start after fanning nine in Charlotte.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre once again began scoring Saturday night, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth when Carlos Narvaez launched his first home run of the season. Norfolk threatened in the bottom of the seventh when Ryan McKenna stole second base following a two out walk, but were unable to bring him home.

Then in the top of the eighth, Josh VanMeter extended the RailRiders lead when he launched a solo home run to make the score 2-0. The Tides attempted to cut into Scranton/Wilkes-Barre’s lead in the bottom half of the inning, loading the bases with consecutive singles from Errol Robinson and Heston Kjerstad, but were once again unable to bring home a runner.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre tacked on another run in the top of the ninth following an RBI single from Jeter Downs to seal their fifth straight win against the Tides.

Starter Cade Povich continued his hot start to the season, making his first appearance since winning the first International League Pitcher of the Week award of the season. He went 5.1 innings, allowing just one run on a hit and two walks while striking out 10 batters, the most by a Tides pitcher thus far this season.

RHP Justin Armbruester (0-1, 9.72) will start on the hill for the Tides tomorrow in the final game of the six game series against Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. First pitch at 1:05 p.m.

POSTGAME NOTES

Cade Can Pitch: In his start tonight, Cade Povich allowed just one earned run on one hit and two walks while striking out 10 batters...since making his first start in the Orioles organization on August 6, 2022, Povich leads all Baltimore pitchers with 236 strikeouts, passing Grayson Rodriguez with his final punch out tonight...Povich is now the first Tides pitcher to strike out at least nine batters in two straight outings since Rodriguez (June 9 - 15, 2023).

Coby Keeps Hitting: Extending his team-leading hitting streak to 10 games tonight was Coby Mayo...he went 1-for-4 while notching the longest hitting streak of his professional career...Mayo also swiped second base, marking his second stolen bag of the season and 23rd of his minor league career...since the start of his hitting streak on April 3, Mayo is batting .428 (18-for-42) with three doubles, a triple, four home runs and seven RBI.

Ring em’ Up: After punching out 14 Scranton/Wilkes-Barre batters tonight, the Tides have now fanned at least nine batters in each of their first 14 games...Norfolk is the only International League team to have started the season with nine strikeouts in its first 14 games...it’s the longest streak by an IL team since Scranton/Wilkes-Barre struck out at least nine batters in 16 straight games from May 7 - 25, 2022...the Tides currently average 10.7 strikeouts per game, fanning 150 through 14 games.
