Tides Complete Six-Run Comeback in Win

Norfolk Earns First Win of Series After Scoring Seven Unanswered Runs

NORFOLK, VA --- The Norfolk Tides (29-26) took down the Gwinnett Stripers (26-29), 7-6, on Friday night at Harbor Park. Despite going down 6-0 in the third inning, the Tides stormed back with six extra base hits and completed their largest comeback win since September 14, 2023 against Memphis.

Gwinnett struck first Friday night, taking a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Eli White launched a two-run home run over the right-center field wall. The Stripers extended their lead to 6-0 in the top of the third following a three run RBI double from Luke Williams and a sacrifice fly out hit by Ramon Laureano.

The Tides responded in the bottom of the third when, following a walk from Terrin Vavra and a double by Hudson Haskin, Jackson Holliday roped an RBI double to the center field wall to make it 6-2. Norfolk continued to climb back in the top of the fouth and added a run back on a Daniel Johnson home run that made it 6-3 Gwinnett.

They then made it 6-4 when Vavra roped an RBI double to bring in Maverick Handley. After loading the bases with two walks by Hudson Haskin and Holliday, Connor Norby blasted a bases clearing, RBI triple to give the Tides a 7-6 lead.

After allowing six runs through the first three innings, Norfolk’s bullpen slammed the door on Gwinnett and did not allow an earned run the rest of the game. Nolan Hoffman worked two scoreless innings before Nick Vespi and Kade Strowd pitched scoreless frames. Matt Krook and Bryan Baker capped off the comeback win with scorless innings of their own, with Baker earning his fourth save.

The Tides will take on the Stripers tomorrow night in the fourth game of their six-game series. RHP Justin Armbruester (1-3, 9.32) will be on the mound for Norfolk, while Gwinnett will start RHP Bryce Elder (2-1, 5.23). First pitch is 6:35 p.m.

POSTGAME NOTES

Holliday Season: Collecting his 11th multi-hit game of the season with the Tides was Jackson Holliday...he went 2-for-3 with a double, two RBI, a walk and a run while extending his on-base streak to a team-leading 14 games and his hitting streak to eight games...during his hitting streak (since May 15, Game 2, vs. Lehigh Valley), Holliday is batting .275 (16-for-58) with 15 runs, four doubles, three home runs, nine RBI and 14 walks...he leads the International League in runs (45) and is one game shy of his career high hitting streak set last season.

The Jet Takes Off: Notching his 10th home run of the season tonight was Daniel Johnson, who finished 1-for-3 with the long ball, an RBI, a walk and a run...the homer registered an 18 degree launch angle, which is the lowest launch angle on a homer that cleared the fence since Shayne Fontana’s also registered 18° on July 5, 2023 at Durham...Johnson is leading all Norfolk hitters with a .350 (28-for-80) batting average in May and has collected 18 runs, six doubles, a triple, six home runs and 23 RBI this month while slashing .439/.675/1.114.

Norby Knocks: Notching his first triple of the season in tonight’s win was Connor Norby...he finished 1-for-4 with the three-bagger while adding three RBI...it marked Norby’s first triple since August 26, 2023 against Durham...since 2022 when Norby made his Tides debut, he ranks second among Norfolk hitters in extra base hits with 96 behind Kyle Stowers (100)...Norby is now slashing .296/.402/.506/.908 this month with 18 runs, nine doubles, a triple, two home runs, 14 RBI and 13 walks while adding five stolen bases through 22 games.
