SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Chad De La Guerra and Chris Owings combined for five hits, but the Pawtucket Red Sox fell to the Syracuse Mets, 6-3, on Wednesday night at NBT Bank Stadium.
The PawSox (31-45) scored two runs in the top of the sixth inning to snatch a 2-1 lead, but Syracuse (38-40) tied the game in the home half of the sixth and scored four runs in the seventh to vault in front in the opener of the brief two-game series.
In his sixth game with the PawSox, Chris Owings went 3-for-4 with an RBI single that gave Pawtucket the lead in the top of the sixth inning. The longtime big leaguer now has tallied seven hits in his last four games. De La Guerra, meanwhile, went 2-for-4 with a solo homer off the batter's eye in the sixth. The 26-year-old upped his OPS to .991 and now has cracked all eight of his homers in his last 21 games.
Tzu-Wei Lin (knee, shoulder), who was slated to start another rehab assignment with the PawSox last night before the game was rained out, played five innings at second base and went 1-for-3 with a first-inning single.
Tyler Thornburg fired a scoreless eighth inning and struck out the first man he saw with a 95 MPH fastball.
PawSox starter Erasmo Ramírez (L, 2-4) allowed three runs in 6.1 innings.
Syracuse starter Harol González allowed two runs in 5.2 innings, while reliever Daniel Zamora (W, 1-0) retired all four batters he faced.
Tim Tebow delivered a go-ahead, two-run double in the seventh inning that put the Mets in front, 4-2.
The PawSox now conclude their brief, two-game series with the Mets on Thursday at 6:35 p.m. PawSox left-hander Kyle Hart (3-2, 3.60 ERA) is scheduled to oppose Mets righty Ervin Santana (0-1, 3.27). Radio coverage on WHJJ (920 AM and 104.7 FM) and throughout the PawSox Radio Network begins with the pre-game show at 6:05 p.m.
Following the five-game road trip, the PawSox return to McCoy Stadium on Monday-Wednesday (July 1-3) for a three-game series against the New York Yankees' Triple-A affiliate, the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders. Patriotic Post-Game Fireworks will follow all three night games - all of which begin at 6:05 p.m. Then when the PawSox are home July 12 (Friday) following the All-Star Break, the first 3,000 fans will receive a Jackie Bradley Jr. Gold Glove bobblehead at McCoy Stadium. On July 14 (Sunday), the first 4,000 fans will receive a PawSox cap, compliments of the Rhode Island Lottery & WEEI-FM.
