Through 30 seasons of Portland Sea Dogs baseball, the team has had 892 players don the Sea Dogs uniform. We look at the best players to have worn each uniform number throughout the franchise’s history. Sea Dogs players have worn 58 different jersey numbers ranging from 1 to 59.
For the most part, we excluded players who appeared on rehab assignments with a few exceptions. For example, there were a few numbers that were only worn by players who made rehab appearances. We also made exceptions for notable appearances such as Hall of Famers David Ortiz and John Smoltz. In these occurrences, we selected both a rehab player and a traditional player coming up through the farm system.
Did you know? – When the Sea Dogs became a Red Sox affiliate in 2003, we recognized all Red Sox retired numbers. So as of 2003, the following numbers were no longer worn #1-Bobby Doerr (though we let Slugger keep wearing it as he is #1 in our hearts), #4-Joe Cronin, #8-Carl Yastrzemski, #9-Ted Williams, & #27-Carlton Fisk. In 2008 #6-Johnny Pesky was added, 2009 #14-Jim Rice, 2015 #45- Pedro Martinez, 2016 #26-Wade Boggs, and 2017 #34-David Ortiz.
