Penrod punches out eight. Ferguson, Mayer launch first homers

Reading Pennsylvania, - The Portland Sea Dogs (1-3) shutout the Reading Fightin Phils (3-3) 11-0 on Thursday night.

Max Ferguson launched a two-run homer to record his first of Double-A while top prospect, Marcelo Mayer, crushed his first homer of the season. Mayer, Kyle Teel, and Blaze Jordan all recorded multi-hit days while seven Sea Dogs recorded a hit in the eleven-run win. Zach Penrod punched out eight across 5.0 innings in his Double-A debut.

Jordan began the scoring in the top of the fourth after bringing home Mayer to score with a sacrifice fly to center field.

The scoring continued in the top of the fifth after Ferguson reached on a single to drive in Mickey Gasper before a throwing error by the center fielder stopped him at third. Roman Anthony reached on a fielder’s choice to drive in Ferguson and the Sea Dogs led, 3-0.

Ferguson (1) launched a two-run blast to right center field in the seventh before Mayer (1) crushed a solo shot to center to extend the 6-0 lead.

In the top of the ninth, five runs came home to score courtesy of an RBI single from Teel along with an RBI single from Jordan. Nick Yorke would double to right field to score Jordan and with his second double of the season, Portland led 9-0. Eddinson Paulino scored Jordan and Yorke with a single to left field to cap off the 11-0 victory.

LHP Zach Penrod (1-0, 0.00 ERA) earned the win after pitching 5.0 scoreless innings allowing two hits while striking out eight. He did not issue a walk. The hold was awarded to Cody Scroggins (1) after 2.0 scoreless innings allowing two hits. The loss was issued to Reading starter LHP Matt Osterburg (0-1, 1.04 ERA) after pitching 5.0 innings allowing three runs on six hits while striking out five. He did not issue a walk.

The Sea Dogs return to FirstEnergy Stadium tomorrow, April 13th for a doubleheader. First pitch for game one of the twin bill is slated for 5:15pm while the second game will begin approximately thirty minutes after the conclusion of the first. LHP Helcris Olivarez will go opposite RHP Efrain Contreras in game one. Portland will start RHP Hunter Dobbins in game two while Reading will start RHP Robinson Pina.
