Gibson to make Major League debut on Saturday

June 24, 2013

The Minnesota Twins announced on Sunday that RHP Kyle Gibson will be recalled on Tuesday and is expected to make his Major League debut on Saturday at Target Field in a start against the Kansas City Royals.

Ranked as the 4th-best prospect in the Twins system, Gibson went 7-5 with a 3.01 ERA in 15 starts with Rochester this season. The 25-year-old also became the first Red Wings hurler since Nick Blackburn in 2007 to toss two complete-game shutouts in the same season. Gibson, in his first full season back from Tommy John surgery, ranked among IL leaders in several pitching categories including shutouts (1st, 2), wins (T-3rd, 7), strikeouts (T-3rd, 79), IP (4th, 92.2) and ERA (8th, 3.01).

Taking Gibson's spot on the roster will be LHP Logan Darnell who was transferred from New Britain. The 24-year-old is expected to make his Triple-A debut in a start for the Red Wings on Tuesday in their series opener against Indianapolis.

Darnell, a 6th round pick of the Twins in 2010, went 6-6 with a 2.61 ERA (28 ER/96.2 IP) in 15 starts for the Rock Cats this season. The University of Kentucky product is coming off his first ever complete-game shutout in his last start for New Britain on Thursday against Erie (9ip, 4h, bb, 9k). Entering the 2013 season, Darnell was 24-21 with a 4.46 ERA over his first three professional seasons.

The Twins also optioned Pedro Hernandez back to Rochester after the southpaw made a spot start in Cleveland on Sunday for the injured Mike Pelfrey (back strain). He earned the win as he pitched 5.0 innings allowing two runs on three hits with six walks and two strikeouts.

In addition, the Twins released RHP Esmerling Vasquez over the weekend. Vasquez, who went 9-6 with a 2.78 ERA in 31 games (8 starts) for the Wings last season, has spent all of the season on the Red Wings disabled list with a right rotator cuff strain.
