Worley blanks IronPigs

Complete game 5-hitter in Wings debut
May 27, 2013

Vance Worley pitched a five-hit, complete game shutout, and Eric Fryer drove in two runs to lead the Red Wings to a 5-0 win over the Lehigh Valley IronPigs Monday afternoon at Frontier Field. The series continues with a 7:05 p.m. game Tuesday; fans can purchase a family four-pack of four tickets, hot dogs, drinks, and a yearbook for $36 for Tuesday's game.

Worley made his Red Wings debut, after being optioned here from Minnesota on Wednesday. It was Worley's first Triple-A start since July 9, 2011 while he was with Lehigh Valley. Worley allowed a lead-off single to Pete Orr, then got two fly ball outs and Fryer threw out Orr trying to steal in the first inning.

Antoan Richardson led off the bottom of the first with a single against IronPigs starter B.J. Rosenberg (1-4). After a pop up to the catcher, Clete Thomas walked, putting runners on first and second. Rochester tried a double steal, but Richardson got caught in a pickle between second and third. An interference call on Lehigh Valley's second baseman Cesar Hernandez, led to Richardson taking third. A strikeout by Jeff Clement, and a line out by Deibinson Romero ended the inning.

Rochester got the second inning started when Brian Dinkelman, followed by Doug Bernier, both walked. Ray Olmedo flew out to center, followed by a passed ball that moved the runners over to second and third with one out. Fryer lined a 2-1 pitch to left field scoring Dinkelman, giving the Wings an early 1-0 lead. Still with one out, Richardson walked to load the bases for the Wings. A pop out to the second baseman by Eric Farris, and a Thomas strikeout looking ended the inning.

Worley had everything working on the mound for him through the first four innings. He had three strikeouts, while only giving up one hit and walking two. Defense also helped Worley, when a ground ball was hit to short, and Bernier flipped it to Olmedo at second and then on to Clement at first, to turn the double play and end the third inning.

Worley allowed the first Lehigh Valley runner to reach second base in the top of the sixth. The first batter of the inning reached first on an error by third baseman Romero. After a fly out to left, Worley walked Cesar Hernandez to put runners on first and second with one out. Cody Asche flew out to deep center, and Cody Overbeck grounded out to Romero to end the possible scoring chance.

Clement singled to right off reliever Greg Smith to start the bottom of the sixth, which ended a streak of 11 consecutive Wings retired. Romero walked on four pitches setting up runners at first and second with no outs. Dinkelman moved the runners over on a sacrifice bunt to third. Bernier hit a hard ball to second baseman, but Clement beat the throw home to score the second run of the game for the Wings. With one out Olmedo ripped a ball down the left field line which scored Romero from second, but Bernier was thrown out at home trying to score from first. After Olmedo stole third, Rochester had a 3-0 lead with a runner at third and two outs. Eric Fryer then tripled to deep right center field scoring Olmedo. Richardson had a beautiful bunt single to the second baseman, scoring Fryer and giving the Wings a 5-0 lead. With Fryer scoring, that is his sixth consecutive game played that he has scored, which is a Red Wings season-high.

Worley gave up a one out single in the top of the eighth. After a groundball that lead to a fielder's choice to second that got the lead runner, Worley walked the next batter in four pitches. A fly ball to Clete Thomas in center field ended the inning.

The Wings put another scoring opportunity together in the bottom of the eighth, when Romero and Dinkelman both singled to left field off reliever Phillippe Aumont. Bernier popped out to short for the first out of the inning. A wild pitch that bounced before the plate moved the runners over to second and third. Olmedo hit a hard grounder right to the second baseman, which kept Romero at third. Fryer grounded out to the third baseman, ending the inning without scoring a run.

Worley (1-0) came back out to pitch the ninth inning for Rochester, and worked around a pair of singles to finish the complete game win, his first complete game since July 9, 2010 when he was with the Reading Phillies.

NOTES: Vance Worley's complete game shutout was the fourth by a Wings pitcher this season (Kyle Gibson has two, P.J. Walters one); no other pitcher in the league has posted a complete game shutout yet. The Wings snapped Lehigh Valley's six-game winning streak...The Red Wings improved to 2-6 on Mondays.

This Day in Red Wings History: 1986 - The Red Wings staged one of their most bizarre comebacks ever, capitalizing on Maine errors to score nine runs in the eighth inning (two of them were earned) to beat Maine 11-6 at Silver Stadium. One of Rochester's two earned runs came on a solo home run by Glenn Gulliver, his first of the season... 2006 -Colby Lewis pitched eight strong innings as Toledo edged visiting Rochester, 3-2, on Sunday... Jason Hart hit his fourth home run of the season for the Red Wings.

This Day in IL Baseball History: 1999 - For the first time in the long history of Durham baseball, dating back to 1902, Durham wins a game played outside of the United States when the Bulls defeat the Ottawa Lynx 6-1. The star for Durham is outfielder Terrell Lowery, who goes 4-5 with a double and drives in two runs. Third baseman Bobby Smith adds two more hits and scores two runs. The victory is also remembered as the game that saw Steve Cox's franchise record 23-game hitting streak come to an end.

It Happened This Day in Baseball: 1941 - Play is halted in the seventh inning of Braves-Giants game at the Polo Grounds so the crowd of 17,009 and players can listen to President Franklin D. Roosevelt's radio address over the stadium's P.A. system. After FDR announces the Proclamation of an Unlimited National Emergency, the tied 1-1 contest is resumed after a 45-minute delay... 1960 - Orioles catcher Clint Courtney becomes the first backstop to use the big knuckleball glove, an innovation of manager Paul Richards. The larger mitt which has a 45-inch circumference helps as knuckleballer Hoyt Wilhelm goes the distance in Baltimore's 3-2 victory at Yankee Stadium in a game that doesn't feature a wild pitch or a passed ball. 2008 - With a 44-0 record and needing just one more win to become the first undefeated team in N.C.A.A. baseball history, Trinity College loses to Johns Hopkins 4-3. The loss sets up a winner-take-all in the Division III World Series in which the Hartford-based school scores a pair of runs in the bottom of the ninth to win the game, 5-4, and the national championship.
